My daughter starts at ECU in a couple weeks. I want to go see her the weekend of the 29th, but it appears everything is sold out - football weekend.

Is there a town fairly close by you'd recommend getting a room at? I don't know the area well - someplace with a selection of good food and beer?

If not that I guess I'd settle for a short drive and an interstate hotel. New Bern has rooms but that looks like an hour drive - away from my home west of Charlotte.

    Thanks for any advice!

Kinston's half-an-hour south, and home to Mother Earth Brewery and a few good restaurants. There are closer towns, but I'm not all that familiar with them. Duck-Rabbit's home of Farmville is closer, but there's practically nothing there.

Rocky Mount is a full size city/town with all the amenities. Residence Inn is nice. it has been years since I have stayed out that way so no idea on beer options but I am sure there is something. Still probably a 45min drive.

Tarboro is tiny town with a few hotels off 64 and a couple of pretty decent restaurants downtown. Same thing, I haven't stayed out that way in years. Wouldn't expect much beer wise but you never know. Tarboro is about a 25min drive to ECU.

Possibly check Farmville, its home to Duck Rabbit, im sure there is at least one hotel there. I live in Kinston, and its not that bad of a drive to Greenville at all.

I'll also suggest looking into Farmville. Washington may be an option as well. Easy drive 20 miles east.

FYI Duck Rabbit is only open on Fridays, so plan accordingly!

Kinston is 28 miles. Bing puts the drive at 36 minutes. Morther Earth is there along with hotels and a good restaurant, Chef and the Farmer, which also has one of the few bottle shops in the area. Another place owned by the same folks, called the Boiler Room, was just written up as having one of the best burgers in the Southeast. Did I mention the Boiler Room has 12 draft lines? I'd stay in Kinston.
