Anyone from the area or around there? My buddy who isnt on BA just moved down there and has no idea of any bottle shops or decent spots to get beer. He said Raleigh is good for it, but hed rather not drive that far just for a good selection. Any suggestions are appreciated!
Winslows downtown and Lowes foods are the highest rated on here..Im an ECU Grad and its pretty slim pickings...they do have a bus that runs back and forth to Mother Earth Brewing in Kinston and Duck Rabbit is very close by...
Yeah I saw those on here, and he said he went to fresh market without much luck. It does seem like hes kinda SOL. Ill pass on the info though, thanks!
Tell him to drive to raleigh. Or wilson (40 minutes) for a better selection. I takr every opportunity to go to raleigh and stock up. Winslows has a decent bottle selection but is marked up wayyyy too much. Only time to go there is on Tuesdays for 2.50 NC drafts - theres usualy a good selection on tap. Other than that, basils gets good local beers on tap. All the grocery stores are similar in selection, but he will have to drive for diversity.
Duck rabbit is a must stop. only open on fridays though. In my opinion their beer is much better than mother earth. Kinston is worth a trip, every bar has mother earth on tap if the brewery is closed. The bus either doesnt run anymore or it only stops at the greenville convention center now. Maybe someone can clarify
I live farther than him from decent beer probably. Only option is to make the drive or order online. Some stores do a order and pickup thing now because of situations like this such as beer study (most people have 9-5 jobs anyway).
Harris Teeter on Firetower just started to really step up their selection and Lowes is pretty decent too. Other than that, The Beer Store in Wilson is good, Duck-Rabbit is probably about 15mins away and always has some good stuff on tap and for sale on Fridays, and Basil's usually has some good stuff on draft (think they just started growlers). Winlsows is ok, but the can be pricey and a bit dated. Should be getting our own little nano soon though
Almost forgot Christy's Euro Pub...they usually have a good selection and do tap takeovers sometimes...food isn't bad either
Awesome guys, thanks for all the information. Ill forward it to him. I am sure he would be up to meet with any of you guys, as he just moved there and doesnt know anyone yet. PM me if interested and ill get you in touch.
Duck-Rabbit is one of my favorite breweries, but the taproom -- in my opinion -- isn't much of a destination. It's very, very small, and when I went they didn't have anything on that you couldn't find in bottle shops across the state. Again, I love the brewery and their beers, just wasn't especially impressed with the taproom. But I know that's not their focus, and perhaps they have plans to add to it now that they're expanding production as well.
ECU grad here as well. (Craft) beer scene hasn't changed much since I was there. There was mentioning of Wilson, which is about 40 miles/40 minutes out. There is a Brewmasters, off Forest Hills Dr. It's a small, but very decent shop. They also do sandwiches (Board's head ingredients) and soups for lunch crowd. How do I know they are legit? I have office in Wilson, and they also have Hopslam drop yesterday. If you drive quick enough, there might be another six-pack left! https://www.facebook.com/brewmasters As far as taproom visit I'm with Handle. Duck-Rabbit is better when you get the bottles elsewhere and enjoy back at the comfort of your own home. Mother Earth, on the other hand, is a trip and a half. You can actually make a day out of going down to Kinston. Do a brewery tour at Mother Earth, enjoy what they have on tap, and hopefully they haven't run out of Silent Night yet. Then you head across the street and stop at the Boiler Room, get yourself some oysters and some bar snack, while you wait on your reservation at Chef & The Farmer.
Great info man, thanks. I'll forward that along to my friend. I was just telling him to look out for hopslam yesterday, so thats great news!
I would trade two Charlotte breweries for B's bbq. Not the best beer selection in Greenville, but I do miss the Q.
I agree buta duck rabbit is the closest place to buy their seasonals. Bars will get them on tap in greenville, but you cant find bottles anywhere - unless you want to pay $20 a sixer at winslows. I always found it weird you cant find duck rabbit seasonals anywhere in greenville, the closest major city to the brewery. Ive seen marzen once at harris teeter but thats it. A duck rabbit trip is worth it alone just for getting bottles to go.
I Agree with this, Same goes for Mother Earth. Their Taproom is super nice and the tour is awesome, but its the same 5-6 beers on tap year round. You can catch Silent Night like a week after the release on tap, but thats about it. Worth a stop if you're new to the area though!
I had no idea how lucky I was that I had B's and Starlight both within 15 minutes until I moved away. Definitely a must stop, also worthy of a day trip if you don't have anything going on.
If ya'll end up at Duck-Rabbit, check out R&B's Kountry Kitchen or Jack Cobb out there in Farmville. Close to the brewery and very tasty
