I haven't been so active since dropping out of the Hop Farm project (long, somewhat comical, somewhat tragic, story), but there is a great thread going about a historic beer called AK in Beer Talk. Haven't brewed anything in almost 3 months now, a bit burnt out, and not willing to brew on the small again, but I am itching to get back in the saddle. This project seems perfect.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/what-are-your-top-3-aks.195791/unread

And at the end of it there is a proposal to try to make this variant of a mild as a group, and a recipe posted.

I am interested to do this, and I know a few others are as well. Thought I would put this here and see if there is additional interest in making a historic style virtually unavailable commercially today.

Am gonna link to this thread in the other thread, and let's see where it goes

I know I'm nowhere near the home brewer of the others that are going to get in on this. Nevertheless, I'm interested to give an AK a shot. Seems like the first thing to do is get an idea of what an AK actually is. Maybe we could start by posting a few different recipes here in the thread. I'm going to tag some of the folks that @drtth suggested we connect with here. Calling @wesbray and @AlcahueteJ. Also, I'm tagging my boy @JackHorzempa, as he has been an invaluable resource to me as I progress towards being a more competent homebrewer.

If historical accuracy is the goal, I'll be mighty surprised if anyone other than patto1ro is able to contribute to this recipe in a meaningful way. That said, I'd probably brew it.

Exactly. Am excited especially for the ability to have historically accurate records from Mr. Pattinson for this.

Ron, thanks man! What a cool project from your mysterious post of Top 3 AK.

Hello all. I'm new here, but Ron linked to my blog in the original thread and I followed up to see where all my traffic was coming from. I've brewed a couple of the recipes for AKs that Ron and Kristen have posted in the Let's Brew segments at Ron's blog. I generally pick one based on the kind of beer I'm looking for (i.e. IBUs, BU:GU ratio, O.G.---things most homebrewers should have a grip on)---beyond that you might find that there isn't a whole lot to chose from between the recipes, except perhaps availability of ingredients (e.g. if you wanted to do the recipes as printed, the 1933 Kidd one on my blog would require finding Mild Malt---easy enough online, but perhaps unnecessary hassle). Kristen's brewing notes are usually a great guide, and I recommend reading as many of them as possible from different recipes. One other thing I would recommend if you decide to brew one of these is taking the time to make brewer's invert syrup. Demerara/turbinado sugar and golden syrup are OK as substitutes, but will taste different, especially in recipes that call for invert #2. You can find instructions for making syrups at the following link, and also in Ron's new book: http://www.unholymess.com/blog/beer-brewing-info/making-brewers-invert

    Good luck with the brewing!

I've made invert syrup using metic's instructions before and can certainly confirm it tastes different to just chucking in some demerera. It is also very nice in a cup of tea

The way I make it now is in a big metal pan and in the oven once it's up to temp, as I found I was having to constantly change the flame and stir to keep the temp in range, which was an annoying thing to do for forty five minutes. In the oven you can just leave it. You need to make sure your oven is accurate though as they can be out by quite a bit, but a temperature probe works fine

I'm in!.....at some point. I'm in the process of moving next month, once I'm settled in my new place my next beer I homebrew will be an AK. From the previous thread and the recipe I read, it honestly sounds delicious.

Can't wait to see how my recent Fuller's Chiswick clone came out too.....

@patto1ro if you could post the recipes here, or contact me with how you want to proceed so we can receive them, that would give us an opportunity to discuss and choose from those you give. Thanks.
