For what it's worth, perennials are typically transplanted in the fall, after they have gone dormant above ground.

I always assumed that the practice of planting hop rhizomes in the spring was just a result of that being the time of year when large hop farms pruned their rhizomes.

maybe on your coast, but over here, perennials are planted in the spring.

I don't grow them but gardening is one of my various hobbies, so I've been paying attention to this thread.

I believe hop rhizomes are only sold 'bare root' and the only time of the year to do that is winter or early spring when they are dormant before heat gets them growing again. Shipping in cold weather conditions keeps them dormant.

That's a good point. Lots of different climates to consider. Around here, perennials are typically sown in late fall/early winter to take full advantage of the seasonal rains. We don't have cold enough winters for the ground to ever freeze so the advise is typically just to wait until it has gone dormant. Conditions in November are probably not as favorable for planting in your part of the world

On a recommendation by @OldBrewer I picked up an Inkbird Plus vacuum sealer and have been more pleased with it than a Food Saver. After cutting the bag to size trying to seal the edges, nothing happened. Unplugged it and plugged it back in....nothing. It was last used with a vacuum hose, so I inspected that as best as I could. Unplugged it again and waited about 5 minutes in hopes that might reset. Again, no lights, no nothing and I thought, "Not even 6 months old and it's fried".
Unplugged it again and noticed I'd been handling the cord to the dehydrator

All that to seal up 0.5 oz Goldings. Hoping to get 3 oz of Cascade.
They really need to be moved to a sunnier location next spring.

Finished up this last weekend. With a little extra help from the folks. Wet totals are as follows, in pounds:
    Comet: 13.5
    EKG: 2.33
    Galena: 10.66
    Cascade: 12
    Tahoma: 6.2
    Fuggles: 2oz
    Vanguard: 2oz

Dry was a little meh, as I learned how dry they are actually supposed to be this year. But all things considered, once I learned that I was pretty close to where I should be there too. The bottom tray of my food dehydrator looks like it would make a gnarly pale ale.

Good on you man. I won't get one-tenth that number in ounces. The tray bottom looks like something else vaguely familiar from back in the day.

Started harvesting my hops — all Cascade — yesterday. I’m estimating a couple of pounds dried before it’s all over. Cheers!

Gorm, refresh my memory. Are foundry hops from your yard, or do I remember you saying something about them growing near a local brewery?

Third year for my Goldings and Cascade. Dry yield was 0.5 oz from three bines on one line of Goldings, and 1.0 oz from six bines on two lines of Cascade. I picked a bit early because there were bugs chowing down on the cones, but even if the bugs weren't present the yield wouldn't have been substantially different. They definitely need more sun.

    Ripper,
Foundry hops are mine that transplanted years ago at a art foundry.
He does have some brewers gold hops he planted, but I have never made a passable beer with them.

there are cascade, nugget, centennial ,chinook. All growing together so I dry them all together. It’s a nice mix.

My centennials and Chinook grow together. Columbus would fit in perfect... if I could only find time to use em.

I harvested mine last week. Got about a pound and a half wet Cascades off 3 plants. I would have gotten a bit more but I was about a week late harvesting. Some of them were bad by the time I got there.
Brewed up a nice IPA to put them in. 1.065 OG, mostly pale, with a bit of munic for a bit more malt backbone. An ounce of Magnum for bittering, all the wet for whirlpool. 1056 yeast. It's bubbling happily away. I think we;re having a block party for halloween, so I'm forseeing it ready for that.
Harvested my Newport over the weekend, 2 plants, got about 10 OZ wet. They didn't come in great this year for some reason. Hve them drying now on a screen with a fan blowing over.
They'kll end up bittering something over the fall.

So even though I literally ripped the crown and all roots from my hops three years ago, they are reliant little buggers.

Even chopped them down a few times earlier in the year so it didn't climb all over my back fence.

They set up shop on just my fence anyway and gave me a boat load of fresh cones to use in a wet hop pale today. Pretty sure the plant that made it was my Chinook plant (had Cascade as well, but that had smaller cones).

The hops smelled incredible and I'm excited to brew up a fresh hop again! Paired the wet Chinook in the 30min whirlpool with Chinook pellet, Idaho 7 and El Dorado.

Malt was 10# Maris Otter Pale Ale, 1# Munich I, 6oz Bairds Crystal 65L and 5oz Acidulated.

    1.053 OG.... Cali Ale Yeast.
