I am planning to start cultivating hops in Southern California. Can anybody please recommend resources and websites which would be educational towards my objective of growing hops? All advice would be appreciated...

I've seen recommendations to check Michigan State University's website on the topic. In Southern California you may need to pay special attention to the required climate information that you find. Hops grow well in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, etc. but Southern Cal....?

I'd suggest contacting your County Cooperative Extension Office, tell them what you're wanting to do and ask if they can point you in the right direction. Most of the folks I've dealt with at Extension offices are quite helpful.

The link below might be a good place to start if you want to try that route. It'll take some poking around to drill down to info for the office that covers your area:

FWIW, here's an interactive USDA Plant Hardiness Zone map. Might be useful now or later.

Great Lakes Hops has a very detailed google doc folder:

Additionally, just searching "growing hops" yielded good results for me in the past.

I am grateful for all the advice that everybody has been so kind to mention. I will consider the feasibility of cultivation of hops within the climate zone of Southern California. I will most definitely check to see if certain strains of hops will do better for cultivation within the climate as well. Best Regards to all who have been so courteous to contribute such thoughtful insight! Cheers!

I've been growing hops for about 15 yrs. About 7 varieties. Some types would not produce at all or just died. Climate related I guess. One thing though that seems to be consistent that I don't understand is this. Certain roots just seem to grow better consistently than others of the same type for me.
By this, I mean certain bines of same variety grow longer than others in same type every year. I have no idea why as they get equal fertilization. Just stronger than the other roots for whatever reason. I'm no biologist. I only can guess the soil is richer in spots.
    Anyone else experience this?

Sure, grew perlie, spelling, grew for two years and died as did a couple roots northern brewer..

for me, cascade and willamet are the tallest while Columbus are shorter as are goldings. I also have no idea . Must be linked to variety.

Cascade coming in strong this year. Hopefully I’ll make up for not getting anything last year.

Have you had plants of the same variety and some of those did well but others didn't? In other words have you experienced variability of hop plant health of the same variety?

    Cheers!

No, pretty much when I plant a variety, usually 2-4 plants, they grow similar.

[IMG] My hops are looking sad. It’s their first year but they quit growing and look like they are dying. The right 2 do anyways, the 3rd left one may survive. They are Cascade[IMG]

Someone else can probably confirm, but it resembles some internet pics of downey mildew.

Not sure what the problem is, but I’d spray them with neem oil NOW

So they looked good UNTIL I used Neem oil. I used Neem oil on the whole garden and just the hops and a couple tomatoes didn’t like it. They were green and healthy and I sprayed them as a preventive measure and then they did this. My green beans did the same but they seem to be recovering

I was just about to dilute some Bonide Captain Jack's Copper Fungicide Concentrate to have on hand if needed. It also comes pre-mixed and ready to use (RTU), with added cost for convenience.

The product label info says it can be used on hops for anthracnose leaf and fruit spot, Cercospora leaf spot, Downy mildew and Powdery mildew.
If you accurately identify your issue as one of those, Bonide might help.

And, did you follow the dosage directions? You can overdose plants be it organic or chemical.

Yessireebob, as best as I can tell. But it'd be good to know if I didn't get it right.

Recommended mix ratio is 0.5 - 2.0 fluid ounces in a gallon of water. My ratio was 1.0 ounce (2 tablespoons) to the gallon.
Maximum annual rate is 49 fl. oz. product/1000 sq. ft., which I take to mean undiluted. If I need it at all, I won’t be using that much.

    Appreciate the follow up.....

Looks like downy to me. Get something on there to treat it. Also, your soil looks very dry. Each hop plant needs a gallon of water a day minimum.
