So I've now seen this at two SoCal breweries. A growler card that basically says fill your growler X amount of times, and get the 5th, 6th, 10th etc. for $1. Not sure how prevalent it is, but when I mentioned this idea to a brewer at another brewery, he discarded it out of hand saying it was illegal to reward buying more quantity of alcohol at a discount. Having not seen growler cards before over the years, I'm just curious about it. I'm certainly not a lawyer, so not sure where this lies on either side of it. Thoughts, opinons, debate?
Right, as does Bootleggers & Craft Brewing now apparently, which is where I've seen these cards. Seems many breweries could/would have done this in the past, to me, had there not been a barrier to it, as the idea is certainly not novel. I get similiar cards from burrito joints, starbucks, yougurt shops, jiffy lube, etc. The mention of legality at another brewer makes some sense to me, (since alcohol is a regulated substance) but I'm just wondering if anyone knows more about some kind of law change, (or exception) or if some of these brewers are skating some kind of line?
I'd be curious to hear this brewer's thoughts on pitcher pricing, case discounts, etc, that are pretty common all over the state.
Yeah I agree. Unfortunately it was at the tail end of our conversation, as I was about to leave & more customers walked in, so I just left it at that.
people always ask me for that jokingly "oh haha you guys should have a punch card!" and i always reply "its called an AA pamphlet" i dont know if its illegal though!
For the record, u can charge what u want for beer as a retailer, but u can not give it away for free.
That makes sense, & perhaps he thought I said free, rather then a dollar. I know Total wines charges 0.10 for wine tasting for this reason. If there us no barrier, legally, then I hope more brewery's adopt the idea.
Loomis Brewing has a punchcard for pints. I don't remember the specifics, but for say $100 you get 40 punches and each punch is good for pint.
Wondering if the brewer (Jim) got that from Beermans. I like Loomis, but miss Beermans. That and beermans was like 15 minutes closer.
Not familiar with Beermans, except the recently opened version in Lincoln, which I don't think is the same. I like Loomis too, I stop in whenever I'm visiting my family that lives about 10 minutes from there.
