I just bought my first growler at Craft & Growler. I was wondering what other places fill growlers that I should check out.

    Cheers

I would not get it from anywhere but Craft and Growler if you are not planning to drink it immediately. That goes double for the Bottle Shop. They have no idea how to properly fill a growler.

JCDenver is very right. Craft and Growler has taps that are made specifically to fill growlers. Their taps fill from the bottom of the growler (as opposed to letting beer run from the top of the growler down the side all the way to the bottom) and also flush the oxygen from the growler by injecting nitrogen (or is it CO2?) into the growler. This helps ensure that it doesn't loose much carbonation and there isn't much oxygen in the container to oxidize the beer. Their growler fills usually stay fresh for a week or two (maybe longer) after the fill, as opposed to a day or two from other places.

The Bottle Shop and most places besides Craft and Growler use a tube to the bottom of growler, while it is not CO2 and a Blichmann gun, it is better than just the straight draw from the faucet.

I've seen the Bottle Shop pull a pint into a glass and then pour it into a growler. I've also seen them tilt a growler under the tap and fill it. So I stand by my statement.

I've never seen the pint glass thing but that sounds like a newb bartender that has no idea what they're doing. I doubt that still happens. If filling directly from the tap with no tube is bad then Draught House in Austin must be idiots because that's how they filled mine when I was down there a while ago.

We really need options in North DFW.

That is fine if you are gonna drink it immediately, where did I say otherwise? I wouldn't count on that lasting more than a day or two though. As for the bottle shop, I've seen that kind of stuff on multiple visits, months apart. The first time I thought it was odd, the second time, not so much. And I guess my larger point is that it is just lazy. If you are going to fill growlers, why not take 30 extra seconds to at least bottom fill with a tube and cap on foam?

Appreciate the input. Yeah, I was wondering what the long tubes on their taps were for.

    Cheers!

There are so many growler theories/myths out there. I've opened growlers and drank half then opened it a week or two later and it still had carbonation. Was it 100% as fresh as it could be? No but that doesn't mean it still wasn't tasty and was to be expected. Some of you are pretty militant/paranoid about that sort of thing.

Addison Whole Foods is pretty much your only pick around that area. I know some Alamo Drafthouse locations also do fills as well, not sure specifically about the one in Addison. Further north, you could try Three Stacks BBQ in Frisco.

I'm in Flower Mound, so counting down the days to Mellow Mushroom and Whole Foods opening up and they are not scheduled to open any time soon. Thanks for the tip in Frisco.

They only sell actual growlers, but cannot do fills in Frisco!

Wow I had no clue about that, they advertised fills the first time I went there though!

I heard they did fills as well, but also remember someone else saying something about fills not being able to be done in Collin County due to some laws? Does anyone know if there is any truth in that?

I like getting fills at Craft and Growler and Whole Foods, but when its 30-45 min away, it makes it hard to do it often. Would love to have some options up north.

Airon, I went there at the end of the year and they couldnt. But with law changes with the permitting, they might have converted their original license to do so. Doing some research now...

looking into the permit they have, they don't have the proper license to do growler fills.

    so I wonder...

Lakewood growler off mockingbird should be open soon, little further north for everyone.

BTW the time I'm referencing that I went there was back last summer. Their menu included prices for 32/64 oz growlers but I haven't been since.
