I was hoping some of you guys might be able to give me some recommendations for some good places that do growler fills in NYC/BK. I've been enjoying drinking a lot of the local offerings from breweries like Other Half, Peekskill, Barrier, and Finback at bars and would love to be able to bring some of this stuff home if possible. Any and all suggestions/info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
Whole Foods BK Has a bunch of stuff including other half as of this weekend, bierkraft and st gambrinus are always solid as well and usually have their current available growler fill list up on beermenus.
St Gambrinus looks to be the best option as far as what they offer as well as the location as I live right off the B/Q in Brooklyn. The only thing is that they don't post the prices for growler fills on beermenus. Do you know what a typical growler fill will cost there? Do they sell their own growlers and will they fill any kind? I have a 32 oz swing top and I know some places won't fill these. Thanks.
they def sell their own - 32oz and 64oz. not sure if they fill swingtops, but im sure if you call theyll let you know.
Assuming you mean the 7th ave stop, looks like we're neighbors. As you said, St. Gambrinus is a pretty fantastic option, but Bierkraft is another great one. While their bottle prices could charitably be called "not competitive", their growler prices aren't bad at all, and they do a great job keeping local guys on tap. Barrier, in particular, always seems to get a few tap lines there. Going further down the slope is The Ploughman, which keeps just a few taplines, maybe 5 or 6, but always well selected beers. Usually local guys. Located down at 7th ave and 15th st.
Bed-Stuy Beer Works http://www.beermenus.com/places/9767-bed-stuy-beer-works On growler now: Finback Double Sess(ion) $12.99 Greenport Harbor Summer Ale $12.99 SingleCut Kim Hibiscus Sour $9.99 Thirsty Dog Nuevo Dog $13.99 Yonkers Honey Blonde $9.99
I live near the prospect park stop on the BQ and take the Q all the way up to Lexington ave for work. All of these suggestions so far have been great, thanks. Looking at some prices at different places, would you guys say $14-16 is reasonable for a 64 oz fill of an IPA? Obviously I realize a higher abv or limited release type beer would be more expensive. I've never really done growlers before, but it seems like the best/only option to get some fresh, local IPAs. Also, somewhat related, have any of you BK residents been to Covenhoven in Crown Heights yet? It's a fantastic bar with a really nice owner and great tap/bottle selection. I saw that they do growler fills as well, but I never got any more info about it.
Given you are already drinking Other Half and Peekskill, looks like you don't need much more help ! Local and straight from the source is the way to go.
I need to get to the Other Half taproom at some point, it's almost embarrassing how many of their beers I've had the last couple months at other bars but still haven't actually been there.
On your commute, some places you can stop: -Columbus Circle Stop: Whole Foods Columbus Circle - pricey, limited selection, but not bad if you're in the area. -Grand Ave. Stop: Top Hops (great selection), Whole Foods Bowery -Atlantic Ave.: St. Gambrinus Regarding Covenhoven, I simply adore the place. Always an outstanding draft selection, and they are getting busy regularly enough that their kegs are turning over fairly consistently. Throw in a really competitively-priced (and curated) bottle selection, and you've got a winner. And I'm in the same boat as you regarding growlers - they evidently do it, but I've never asked or seen anyone fill up there.
Go straight to the source, very cool place to hang out and drink. You can buY the growlers there and have them filled. They have 32 and 64 ounce. If I lived in Brooklyn I would be there a couple of times a week.
@MisterBisco I've been going there almost every weekend for the last 6 weeks or so, might've seen you there. Everything you said is spot on and I love that they do happy hour and have such an amazing patio/garden area. It's also nice that even when it fills up it still doesn't feel crowded. @jrnyc The only thing that has stopped me from going is my gf doesn't really drink beer and I'd feel kind of bad dragging her along. That said, when they do have their first bottle release I definitely want to check that out. If/when they start canning or bottling some of their IPAs I can see myself going often.
I think I can help you setting your priorities straight : 1) Consider getting a new girlfriend who likes beer 2) Keep girlfriend and go to Other Half without her Get there soon, best place to drink all of their stuff at the same time.
Let your gf drag you along when she goes shopping and you won't feel so bad dragging her along for beer. Works for me and my wife. And when we go to Manhattan, I go to the bars, she goes shopping and we meet when we're changing locations. I am a lucky man.
@jrnyc, She's actually really cool about my craft beer obsession, but she was diagnosed with celiac last year which doesn't allow her to drink beer. We go to craft beer bars often and I try to find ones that also offer a cider or mead option for her so we both can enjoy it. She has said she'd go to OH with me (I've brought it up often haha), I'd just feel sorta bad since there wouldn't be anything for her to do. @otispdriftwood She has very rarely dragged me out shopping, but on the few occasions she has we have a similar arrangement. She'll go clothes shopping and then we'll hit up any bottle shops in the area after.
Take her out for dinner at Frankie's 457. Prospect Park is a bit of a walk. Make a trip out of it. There are activities in the area other than Other Half.
