Yeah. Considering that a universal growler policy would open the profits of any growler being filled. How many more growler filling customers do you open yourself up to, or multiple growlers filled at once do you open your profit margin to.

Well worth the investment of some tags with proper labeling that you need anyway.

If the name and the ABV aren't on a label approved by the ABC (for that specific beer and size), then it's not legal.

We're "killing the messenger" because you're spreading misinformation without a reputable source. And no, "some brewer" that you know doesn't count.

By the way, you might let them know that their business model is going to have some issues if the ABC does decide to crack down on them filling their current growlers illegally...

One thing that has bugged me about all this growler talk is the letter of the law says Volume of container needs to be labeled as well. My stone growler nor hang tag mention if I have a 1 or 2 liter growler. So seems to me this would back up what people have said about most breweries filling growlers illegally already.

Pretty sure that's not true, unless the printing has worn off. Even in that case, I think many glass growlers are made with the volume embossed somewhere in the glass itself.

The messenger gets killed when they openly spread false information without citing a source.

    Seems like a contradiction.

They could possibily be writing the name and abv on the caps, but if that's the case then I feel like switching to a hang tag with a list of various regular beers that can simply be checked instead of written out would be SAVING them time. Maybe enough time to offset the costs of the hang tags?

Honestly, it completely confounds me as to why any small brewery would refuse to fill blank growler. The big guys can get away with it because everyone already knows who they are, and everyone already has one of their growlers. The small guys still have to prove themselves though, meaning they should want to get their beer out there in anyway possible. And since they came late to the party everyone already has a shelf or two full of growlers, and are bitter about it. They're fighting an uphill battle to try to get people to buy yet another. And why? Apparently to save a few cents on a hanger tag? It all seems incredibly short sighted.

And yes, I realize you're only the messenger, OTB. But you can be the messenger both ways!

Yeah, that was kind of my point. It takes too long to check and hang a tag, but not too long to write on every cap.

My mistake my Stone growler does.

Touché. I guess I skimmed over the bolded area's a bit too much, since I thought you were saying he was being contradictory about whether they provide all the correct info at all.

Being a good brewer has very little to do with being a good business person. You have to be a exceptional brewery for me to even consider buying a growler from in the last year + going forward. I almost bought one from Beachwood, otherwise Alpine is the only one I felt compelled to break my ban for. It all was seemed to me that selling beers in growlers from your brewery must have one of the highest profit margins for any beer sold.

I've lost track. Which breweries in San Diego are actually doing growler fills of blank growlers now? I finally got my Drink Tanks growler from their Kickstarter and I'd love to fill it up. Is Alesmith the only one I can go to?

From the list below, it looks like Automatic, Benchmark, and Monkey Paw will fill any growler.
Other breweries Stone, Modern Times, etc... have restrictions on the type of blank growlers they'll fill.

    Nice Excel sheet!

If I worked for the ABC, all I have to do is visit the folks with a "Y" in the 'Fills growlers w/ other brewery's logo?' column and collect $10,000.00 each for their license violations.

    Well done.

As the owner of said spreadsheet, I’m not sure what you’re getting at - we and all the breweries know, per the OP, that you have to actually cover up any logos/info from another brewery. Any brewery in California that will fill another brewery’s growler without at least putting a piece of duct tape on it is insane and playing with fire.

I'm guessing IceAge was trying to be ironic - few people are that clueless.
