I went to a local brewery hoping to try their DIPA...growler only....is $30 for an untried, local beer too much?
I can get several national brews at another outlet for half the cost of an unknown.

I think $30 is too much, but probably close to average for a DIPA. I max out at 20; I might go 25 for a favorite.

Yes. The best dipa around me (gandhi bot) sells for 15 bucks a growler, while another place sells their average stuff for 14 and about 25 for heavier abv beers. Im not sure if they have different costs to brew beer (one is a brewery and one is a brewpub), but 15-20 bucks for 5 beers/4 pints seems more than enough. $30 is ridiculous.

$30 seems high but it depends on how much you want it. You mention that it is growler only. If you mean you can't order a glass of said beer to see if you like it first than I would pass. Just my opinion.

Can you ask for a taste? $30 is outrageous, and awfully strange that they sell "growler only" beers but you can't just buy a glass. Maybe something to do with licensing?

Also, re: $30 being "close to the average" for a DIPA is probably region dependent. Several excellent DIPAs available for 64oz growler fills for around $10-17 in PDX right now (ex: Lagunitas Waldo $9.99/64oz; FW Double Jack $16.99/64oz; Boneyard Hop Venom $16.99/64oz)

Very expensive. The highest price around me is $20 and that is only for the high end beer. Most DIPA are around $15-20.

IMO that is twice as much as it should cost

My Costco just got a couple pallets of pre-filled growlers of Rogue's American Amber for $11.99. Not a terrible beer plus it's another growler (never can have too many) so I pulled the trigger. Like others stated, 30 is redonkulous.

Thanks for the input, all. Yes I could ask for a sample but I'd still have a hard time paying that much for 64 oz of beer.
Stone Arrogant Bastard...$12.99...Lagunitas IPA..$11.99...not opposed to spending for beer ...but that just seemed too much.

I'd have a hard time dropping $30 on a growler I might not even like.

The better question is why a brewery wouldn't release said Double IPA in a smaller size. Unless I heard that its quality was legendary, seeing only a $30 growler fill would alienate me from trying the beer.

Seems really high. Local growler fill station has boneyard hop venom everyday and notorious couple times a month for $15.

    I pay $12 for a growler. Only $8 for a refill.

Yes that is much too high a price for any growler. Is it a barrel of beer or what?

Considering I can get Hop Juju(when available) for $19, that does seem steep.

yep to me it is and what size growler its varies by state.,gallon maybe not, but its on the edge. I pay 25 tops for a gallon growler but it has to be "GREAT" beer/ale. I not paid for a growler in 6 years. now. they are just too pricey all these new breweries having to pay their loans back,,,,,lol

$30 for a growler from a local brewery is nuts.

What is the brewery and what is the beer?
