To counter myself a bit, lots of people don't blink spending $20 or more for a bomber of beer. Yes, that's a "specialty" beer, but you're getting less than half the beer of a growler.

Even a decent $10 bomber would equal to more than $20 in growler costs, so I struggle with the economy of equation for bombers.

For a food comparison, I have no problem dropping $13 on a decent burger from a "nicer" grill/bar/restaurant, but I have no interest in spending $4-6 for a burger at McDonald's. I imagine people are similar in beer purchases. A four-pack of Hopslam for $18 or BA Darkness for $28 can feel like a better quality purchase than a $15-20 growler fill of an average, standard style.

To each their own, I suppose.

Not sure if you guys are talking about MSP area specifically, but in Central Iowa, I seem to accept that prices are at least a little higher for growlers. Maybe it's the type of beer I get in growlers though... I'm with @writerwithwrywit. I don't buy "flagship" beers in growlers or anything I can obtain for similar money. Some breweries won't sell their specialties though (Madhouse). Most of my growler fills are Todd at HyVee for $15 (4 packs are $18), Alluvials IPAs ($14-$16), 515 IPAs ($20 64oz fills)... I'll get some occasional other fills from HyVee, but I don't think they are ever over $20. That seems to be my threshold, though I did get one 32oz fill of BA Ten Fiddy for $25. That's a lot, but it's that good to me. Eh, my 2 cents...

Your points are good ones, though I generally stay away from most beers in bomber format. I find the best value in specialty beers in 12 oz format like Rum King, Old Blaggard, Expedition Stout, etc. etc. Sure they aren't as sought after or rare but so what? I don't care if I miss a particular release, there is so much awesome beer available these days. Of course I'm happy to pay more for truly special stuff but I don't feel a need to chase everything that comes out.
