Once you open it, is it done? Finish it all in one night?

i would... ive had beer that doesnt taste to bad but it really loses alot of carbonation...no one like a flat beer.

Seems to vary based on the technique or method of filling. I'm not an expert on these variations. But I've experienced beer to easily last a week in a well filled growler, sometimes a bit longer.

ive never had a growler last a week maybe cause i drink it all of course but it usually loses carbonation pretty quick id say 3 to four days max if im drinking by myself and only with a certain type top the big plastic black onbes seem to hold things together well....not knocking what your saying cause i only get growlers in a few places... just from my experience

I personally have kept sealed growlers in the fridge for about a month and they still drank fantastic. The key is a good fill and seal. Once you crack them they start to degrade quickly.

Sealed and cold it will last a few weeks.

I can honestly say I have had one I drank a beer out of on vacation at my parents and left it in their fridge, a month later it was still 100% carbonated. I have also aged a growler for 6 months unopened and was great. Good seal, bottom filled capped on foam. I had one explode when it got warm in my hotel room once too. Sounded like a shot gun going off.

As recommended by a brewer I know I aged a porter of his from his brewpub, which is local to me, for a year in a growler it was perfectly fine. They fill from the tap cap on foam and heat seal the cap. Also they have nice thick seals on the inside of their caps. I check the cap and tighten it down regularly but if your not sure how they filled it or didn't see it happen I'd error on the safe side and drink it asap. You should probably be more worried about how long its good once its open though.

I've read about this "capping on foam" before. This is one of the techniques I've heard helps to make a growler last longer. What exactly does this mean though, and why is it beneficial? Just pouring enough so that foam is coming out the top of the growler when you either screw or pop the top on?

Where there is foam, there is not air—it mitigates oxidation.

I had a growler of Sculpin in the fridge somehow sit for 6 weeks before I got to it, it was still very carbonated and very tasty. I believe it was a swing top growler, I've noticed those are much better than the twist caps.

Would it be tempting fate to put a growler in your checked in bag for a flight?
    Anyone done it?
