I'm new to beer trading, so possession my ignorance on this. . . But does anyone trade growlers? I've skimmed the ISO:FT boards and i don't see any mention of growlers. Is it an issue of freshness?
People do, just more rarely. It's more expensive because of the weight, and obviously freshness is the other main reason. But it definitely does happen.
The large majority of my trades involved growlers (and I trade A LOT in case you didn't notice ). I've received quite a few growlers as well. Contrary to popular belief, shipping growlers isn't more expensive. Given the glass and beer volume, a growler is similar in weight as similar volume in bottles. The main concern is freshness and if the carb will hold. Yes, you do lose some freshness and carb, but very little. Only 1 of the growlers I sent went flat and I have not received any complaint of the beer being "not fresh". The only time I got flat growlers was when the cap was loose and not taped up. In both sending and receiving, most growlers are 3-8 days old by the time it gets to a trader. Ideally, trade 1L swing top or 32oz screw cap growlers. They are easier to pack. Aside from taping the cap (to prevent leaks) or swing arms (to prevent them accidentally popped out), packing growlers is the same as packing bottles.
Thanks for the feedback. @Abbbp I'm in Miami. Add far as i know, the closest brewery that does crowlers is Due South up in Boynton Beach, about 70 miles from me. everyone else does 32/128oz growlers
I got a lot of good info in this thread a while back: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/shipping-growlers.201487/
Yes people, trade growlers, frequently. How frequently depends on the particular brewery people have access to
How would shipping a 750 ml growler be any more expensive than shipping a 750 bottle of any other kind?
My apologies that when I think growler, I think about the infinitely more common 64oz growler, not HF 750ml growlers or whatever random places have them. thanks for your snide comment though, bro.
64oz growlers may be more common in back in the day, but nowadays, 32oz and 1L are also very common. Those aren't significantly larger than 750ml. Regardless of that, shipping 2x 32oz growlers, roughly the equivalent of 2x 750ml bottles cost you about the same as shipping a 64oz growler. If you translate 64oz growler to roughly 5x 12oz bottles, it works the same way. It's a misconception that shipping growlers is more expensive. Harder to pack, yes, but not more expensive.
That's totally fair--I don't generally ship growlers, so I'm wrong and that's totally fine. I just appreciate your response/explanation a lot more than his...
Lighten up francis. There was nothing "snide" , it was a basic question asked of someone matter of factly telling someone something that appeared to be inaccurate. I'm quite sure why you would even chime in since admittedly you generally don't ship growlers? Perhaps leave the answer to.people who do ship them? I don't know, but in any event cheers!
