Just received a filled screw cap growler as part of a trade. The growler arrived with top exposed in wrapping with no tape or other additional closure for the cap. As such the cap came slightly loose dripping out about a 1/10 of the contents and as a result was completely flat and undrinkable.

What is trading protocol when it comes to growlers? Is it trade at your own risk or should I request a new growler or substitute?

What are others practices, packing, etc. when shipping out growlers?

    Thanks

in short, you're due a new growler.

once you noticed the problem, best practice would have been to stop and take a picture before going further - and then taken another pic that indicated the loss of beer in the growler.

happened to me once even though i had taped the top up well. it was a one off IPA from sun king. i waited till the next nice one off was released and sent it along to the guy on the receiving end.

that said - growler trading in the heat of the summer - probably not the best idea.

    cheers

Did you tell your trading partner what happened before posting here? What was their response?

To me, if beer doesn't arrive in once piece, it is on the shipper to make good.

Was the cap loose? If not, it woulda happened with tape, methinks. 6oz ain't much of anything in the growler shipping game, this is shitty weather to be trading growlers and frankly ya trade at your own risk in these conditions.

I did not take a picture, which I should have done. I unpacked refrigerated overnight and tried the following evening and it was completely flat.

To note, this trade was agreed upon nearly a month ago and it was assumed that it would not have taken this long to received my end. To this point since Monday, there has been no response from the other trader. I can see that he has seen my notes so I am unlikely to get this rectified.

    To ShogoKawada

Yes the cap was slightly loose. The loss of the contents isn't the concern as the entire growler was subsequently flat and undrinkable.

    Thanks for the responses

Sucks to hear... When then happens to growlers I ship, I always make an effort to replace the growler with the same beer if possible. If not, we come to another compromise. I used to buy 2 growlers of each one I was shipping just to avoid this problem, but once my packaging got honed in I haven't had a single problem. Best of luck. Cheers!

if the cap was lose, his fault, IMO, you're owed a fresh growler. No different than if a bottle broke due to shitty packaging.

A stand up trader would replace it, but I am curious as to what the beer was.

The cap should have been secure and taped. Your partner owes you a new growler.

It was a Live Oak Hefe.

You are owed a new growler, though pictures would have been ideal.

I avoid trading for growlers, so I don't have those problems.

I've only received one growler via trade. It was in the middle of winter and I'm guessing because of the extreme temps it seeped a little as it warmed up. I drank that shit with the quickness and everything was fine.

In your situation I would see if your partner could possibly re-send another or sub it for something non-growler.

    My question:

Why in the hell isn't the growler cap being taped until it looks to be "OK", and then taped for another 3 minutes?

If you send a growler, you have to tape it up until you feel comfortable. Then, you should tape it up again. If it fails, the quality of the growler's contents determines the actions. BA Hunahpu's....call off the trade. Limited DIPA that was an "extra" or "add-on", make it up above and beyond in an additional shipment.

Oh, man. That sucks. I've sent out more than a little bit of some Live Oak Hefe. If he doesn't get you another one, I can hook you up.

I traded for a growler of Live Oak Hefe. Shipping exception-->growler removed--->"rest" of package sent on (which was only the extras). That was weeks ago, still waiting on another one. I wonder if it's the same traded.

    I BM'd you ferillo

This beer is not hard to come by in Austin - Whip In usually has it for growler fills. Your trade partner should send you a replacement ASAP.

My trader said he ,"couldn't find any place to fill it anymore" and said he was going to send something else (which he never did), so this is good to know.

Its ok, Ive come to terms with the fact that I probably got burned at least acouple weeks ago. Ill try to contact him again this week then and if nothing will comeback and post a precautionary Bad Trader Alert thread. I was giving him the benefit ofthe doubt since he did in fact send a package with extras, there was just a leak which he then didnt remedy. Not a big deal, the trade was small and simple, but its the principal I guess.
