Hey All, I did a search on my question, but didn't really find anything. I'll be in Manhattan next week, and will be hitting up all my favorite places to hang out, such as Blind Tiger and Rattle 'N Hum. I knew there were places like Growler Station and Whole Foods Bowery that fill growlers, but does anyone have experience getting growler fills from BT, RnH, or other similar places? I have an entire suitcase of 32oz plastic growlers "Bullets" and would like to get the best of what's around. Any thoughts? Thx, Andy
Here's some places that will fill growlers: Any whole foods Duane reade on 72nd, 76th, union sq Les: top hops, good beer, growler station Midtown: pony bar, rattle n hum, beer authority West village: blind tiger Uws: dive bar, george keeley, Jacobs pickles Ues: pony bar, city swiggers These just a few off the top of my head, most beer bars in the city will fill your growler
Never gotten anything filled at either of them so not sure if they'll fill other growlers. My personal recommendation for getting growler fills at bars would be both Pony Bar locations. http://hk.theponybar.com/ http://ues.theponybar.com/ The always have a solid lineup and their growler prices are fantastic for a bar (note: Hells Kitchen just had a Stone takeover and UES had a Barrier takeover, hence the current prevalence of those). Other shops to check out for growler fills: Good Beer (9th st btw 1st Ave and Ave A) Malt and Mold (E. Broadway and Clinton St)
Very cool, thanks. I know beermenus has a long list of places that will fill growlers, but none of the websites state whether they will fill your used growler, regardless of size or what it is made of. My 32oz bullets don't even have the alcohol warning on them.. I wonder if that would be an issue. Regardless, my sobriety for the next week + is going to be seriously in doubt.
Not every place is equipped to fill the 32-oz. growlers - don't have a narrow hose, usually. But the Whole Foods locations will fill them, and I think the Duane Reades. If you're up in Harlem, the Best Yet Market at Frederick Douglas and 118th usually has a few good taps for growler fills. There and other places (Duane Reade, I think) will charge you more, ounce for ounce, to fill a quart growler than you'd pay to get a half-gallon growler filled. EDIT: And don't worry about the labels, warnings, etc. - no one will probably blink.
Oh, and if you're at WF on the Bowery, don't forget New Beer, just a few short blocks down Chrystie Street.
Ok, follow up question, but unrelated. If I bring some 3 floyds bombers, are any of the bars cool with giving them to the bartender for samples? Some places are cool with this where I live because they celebrate good beer, other places don't want anything but their own beers in glasses.
New beer and good beer aren't too far from each other if I recall. I was going to make an evening of the 3 beer places plus some of katzs meaty goodness.
In midtown there is a reasonably new place called Beer Authority Which is owned by the RnH folks. They fill growlers. Would be Interested though if the bars will do a 32 ounce container. Wouldn't know about bringing in 3f stuff for samples.
I was at a bar, appropriately named Growlers, in Tuckahoe and some people from Philly brought a few Russian River Sours with them for the bartenders and they had no problem drinking them.
This really depends on the time of day, the place and who happens to be working IME. The only way to go about it is to bring the bottles along and feel out how beer-geeky the particular bartenders are before whipping them out.
I'm late to the thread, but if anyone stumbles across this in the future note that neither Pony Bar location will fill a growler unless it's their own branded one. I love Pony Bar otherwise but this seems like a straight-up cash grab of a policy. Frustrating to schlep a couple empty growlers there just to hear "Sorry, we can't fill those."
