I don't own one, but will get one soon. Just thought I'd get an idea from the people that have them...what size do you have? How many? What do you usually fill it with (imports, locals, hoppy, session, high abv) and if there's anything in particular you really seek out with your fills (stuff that isn't bottled, places that sell counter-pressure etc)?

I have both a 1L and lots of 2L. They both have a purpose and I am lucky that the place that fills mine will fill any growler (unlike a lot of places). I seem to go for imports but that is normally because they look more interesting. High ABV is a pain in the ass. Hoppy beers are good.

Counter-pressure is the only real way to go. Other methods are okay but have nowhere near a week of shelf life.

Got enough of them to be on the Collectors i reckon ... hate when you drop them at 1am when you are trying to struggle in the door ... it aint pretty ... how do you have fresh beer in you house that lasts more than 6 hours I ask Mr Dgilks?

My liver is only so capable Scott. Unfortunately, 2L of IPA is sometimes just too much. But I do understand your sentiment.

I have one 2L that Mordecia sent me at my mum's place.

I haven't ever gotten a grower fill of anything myself because a) few places in Sydney offer growlers and b) the ones that do do not offer anything unique, appealing or worth the money in my opinion. That said I haven't checked out Beer Cartel's growlers yet as I have never actually been to their store.

It seems that Sydney consistently gets denied the interesting and unique growler offerings which might actually make them worthwhile (Green Flash 30th Street, Black Racer etc.). I presume it's mainly because venues here which offer growlers simply don't give a shit.

Yeah it's revealing when you have a continuous stream of emails from outlets in Victoria and WA detailing the increasingly excellent stuff they're getting on growlers, when all the while the Taphouse and Beer Cartel can't scrub up a single half interesting offering. Warners is significantly better, but still way behind WA and Vic.

I suppose I own several, from Rogue swingtops to a few Grolsch Magnums up to a 2L Colonial, my only 'real' growler.

I refilled the Colonial growler the day after I bought it, on my way out of Margaret River, shortly after Dig left the brewery. That was my most recent growler purchase.

I probably shouldn't say this, but I have never taken a growler home, and rarely take squealers home. I do get squealers of stuff that isn't available in bottle, but due to the limited nature of a lot of stuff that comes, I just leave it for customers most of the time.

In saying that, once Tilquin kegs come, I'm buying a kegerator. There might be a shortage of them, as they will be at my house.

Same goes for the Rodenbach and Boon. Sorry guys!

If you get a growler filled at a brewery, how long is the brew typically "good" for? Assuming the growler has a swing top lid or cork, of course.

I doubt it's counter pressure, so I recommend drinking it that night.

Dang, 2L is quite a bit to drink in one night (if it's high gravity especially). Will it really go flat that quickly?

Very few breweries in the US counter-pressure pour.

Reminds me of this one time at San Diego Band Camp and apparently there was a growler of Stone Ruination following a few West Coast IPA's ... nothing like waking up fully clothed from the day before ... buggar me ...

    Growlers are awesome.
They are great for beer on the run and even better when filled at the source. They will go flat, and depending on the beer, it can take a few days, or even that night. I would prefer to suggest to our customers who get a Growler fill to consume it that night/day, but alot of them think that's unreasonable unless going to a party or sharing.
We haven't really done too much in the way of big beer/high abv fills with ours, because of the hefty price tag. Our regular range runs at $15 for a refill.
I've got a whole bunch of Growlers from 1L to 3L, and use them regularly. Noting better than sharing a few pints of brewery fresh beer with the wife. Or by myself.

I guess the question would be: what do Aus craft beer lovers want from and in their Growlers?

ok ive seen a growler last from 1 day to 4 months (murrays grand cru @ 1 degree)
ive got about a dozen or so varying from squealers (1 litre to 2L of different suppliers)
having just finished a growler of young henrys yippee imperial ale for beer cartel.
ive only seen one place that does the counter pressure fills and thats plonk in canberra.

I'm 90% sure Warner's is using the same system as Plonk. So yes, CPF at both.

I'm reliably informed that I am wrong. Warners is straight off the tap.

I have one 2L. Not worth having any more than that as only the one place in Hobart is filling. They usually have some regular local stuff on but occasionally will put on something "special". Ranges from $20 to $25ish per refill. A bit on the high side but still worth getting for me.

    edit:
Also, not cp filled and only the screw tops. The drop in carbonation is noticeable the second day and pretty much flat if it gets to a third day (ie two days after getting it home).
