I'm interested in history, so of course I was interested to read about grut beers. Or gruit. I would dearly like to sample some. I'm in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota. Does anyone possibly know of any brew pubs or tap rooms to visit, or brands shipped to this area that I could ask for?
This BA subpage on gruits would be a good place to start. Most of the beers and breweries listed are not accessible. However, I did notice Bent Brewstillery's Funked Up #22 is listed as a Gruit. I won't and can't vouch for the beer. I do recall picking up a gruit from Dogfish Head years ago. They have an ancient ales series that adapts historic recipes. You might not be able to get your hands on a gruit, but some of their others might be interesting to you. Maybe check out Midas Touch which is a herbed/spiced ale adapted from a ancient recipe. Dogfish Head is currently available on shelves around the Twin Cities.
I had no idea there were so many! I might almost say it's too much information, but it sure gives me something to work with. Thanks!
Town Hall Brewery has one called Heather. I believe they usually brew it for late fall. I know it wasn't on at the brewery as of last week. I always thought it was a beer worth drinking.
Many of the Williams Brothers brews at the top of that list are available at some stores around here. You do not see them as often as in years past however. Fraoch being the most common.
Oliphant Brewing in Somerset, Wisconsin has one called Groot. That's a short drive from the cities. I was a few miles away in Hudson yesterday, now kicking myself for not running up there for a Groot, but we had no time. Gruit is one of four styles I have left in my quest to try all 104 styles on BA.
Fair State had one a couple of months ago, but it looks like they don't have it on tap at the moment.
Contrary to what I was told, Oliphant doesn't have Groot on tap now, but apparently it's in their rotation. Bummer.
