Anybody make a beer with this substance? I searched the forums and came up empty. It's supposed to be quite bitter, so I wondered if it could be used in a stout or porter like one would use coffee beans... and it is loaded with double the caffeine content of coffee.
I still have a bar of it my friend gave me some time back. If I am sorely in need I scrape a bit of it into coffee, strong bitter, man, but I can't imagine it being good in beer. OTOH I love guarana soda, so maybe there is some way to make it less bitter?
Maybe brew a beer that you don't use bittering hops in then bitter to taste with the guarana? disclaimer: I know nothing about guarana beyond gimmick soda pop from the 90's.
I don't know how it would taste in beer, but I can tell you that maca is crappy as an herb and crappy as a bitter in beer, though some folks seem not to hate it. I drank only 3 of my 6 http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/31577/93992 and guarana is even more bitter than maca.
I have had this beer before. It had a slight taste similar to Guarana the soda, but very little. I have never used guarana on it's own so I am not able to comment on how to brew with it.
