Gueze and Lambic drinkers: Do pellicles bother you?

Depends on the brewer, the price and how bad I want the bottle.

Yup. If its 3F or Cantillon.

 

Not anymore. Bought a 3F Oude Kreik with a bunch of bullshit all in the neck. Tasted terrible. Like a handful of pennies.

 

Lame. I've been through about about half a case of 375's of 2007 3F kriek that had incredibly gunked up necks. Wasn't the best kriek I've had, but I still enjoyed them all greatly.

 

Hmm... Maybe there was something different about the specific bottle i had. Had 3-4 other people give it a taste and we all agree it tasted like hate sex.

 

Lol. The bottles I had were stashed away in a cooler for 4 years. Might just come down to storage if it was an older bottle. The aroma on mine was a bit rubbery/unpleasant but the taste was spot on for a kriek.

Crap around the neck really wouldn't scare me away from buying a lambic. If it were a fantome I would run away though.

Had a bottle of Gueuze Tilquin that had what looked like snot in the neck, but it tasted delicious... so whatever ^_^.

 

Do we know what causes this? Does it have anything to do with compromised seals/oxygen or is it just wild yeast being wild?

 

i have had yeast in the neck from being on its side for some time and then stood up. not sure if that is the same thing.

 

I'm pretty sure that's all it is. Most lambic brewers store all their beer and age all their beer laying down and even ship them laying down. Then they get to the states and sit on shelves upright and occasionally the yeast will cake to the sides and the neck.

I don't really see it as an issue. But then I usually drink the dregs when I'm done with a bottle so take that with a grain of salt..

Oh. Ok then. I stand corrected. Thanks for the info. Still doesn't bother me.

 

A pellicle is a natural defense to protect it from oxygen. I don't think it's gross. Lambic is a somewhat aquired taste so being creeped out by a pellicle seems odd.

 

What species of protozoa inhabits the necks of lambic bottles?
