Had a disagreement @ Torst. Who's right?

I got in an argument with the bartenders from Torst in Brooklyn yesterday. Let me know who you think is in the right:

They posted a Facebook event that they'd be welcoming Oxbow, a small Maine brewery, to NYC. The "event" would be all day and you could come meet brewers and try their beers. They said they'd have bottles to go.

When I got there, they were trying to charge $50 for the bottles (whether staying in or to-go). They said that that was below their normal markup and that that was nice of them.

I thought it was going to be like a bottle release at the bar. where they'd be selling the beer as if it were on the shelf.

Was really frustrating. I tweeted about it and exchanged some DMs with Jeppe. He was nice about it, explaining that they'd still bought the beer through their distributor and had to charge a markup, but that this price was below their usual markup price.

I still respectfully disagree and think that the spirit of the event seemed like a release to me. Trekked all the way there and left empty handed.

Since they are a bar, don't they have to price bottle sales for on-premises consumption? Plenty of bars have "to-go" bottles, but most (like Torst) charge the same amount to go as they do to stay in. From the fact that it was only mentioned in the comments, that seems like the case here. It seems like it's more your misperception rather than them unfairly promoting the event. The language on the FB page talks about it as a "premiere" event. Seems like they are new to NYC, and they hooked up with Torst to debut their beers for bar service here. Not sure where your impression came from.

Moral seems to be - call ahead next time?

Unless they took a post off of facebook I do not see anything that would lead me to believe there was a bottle release going on.

In one of the comments sections, somebody asked if they were selling bottles to go. They said yes. I couldn't find anything else to suggest it.

I don't know about others experience, but NYC isn't much of a "take away" bottle place, whereas I noticed that all over the place in Philly.

I personally assumed it was like any other event. They would have stuff on tap, which is what I always get instead of bottle at a bar. If they had bottles, it would only be on premise and marked up a good amount (on premise pricing is way different from bottle shop pricing).

I just think you misunderstood what they were presenting. In the end, they did sell bottles, you just didn't want to pay the price.

this is the reasoning that I've heard given to explain why Bierkraft's prices have skyrocketed over the past 3 or 4 years

I would love to hear where you heard that, because it's bullshit. Bierkraft isn't a bar. Their prices are utterly insane for no reason I can determine. Just look at Good Beer - same model, equally expensive real estate, non douchebag pricing. It would be amazing if another quality beer store opened in Park slope and charged reasonable prices and forced bierkraft to compete.

    Sorry, you touched a nerve.

With regards to Torst - sorry OP, I agree with everyone else. I read their Facebook post yesterday and did not at all expect this to be a bottle release. I think you may have simply misinterpreted the intent. It happens to the best of us.

you're wrong, sry. torst sells all beer to go for the same price they sell on-premises. i bet if rattle n hum, ginger man, blind tiger, or pony bar sold you a bottle to go, they wouldn't miraculously give you a discount so you can not drink it there.

If you could post the actual Facebook announcement, we could gauge it better. However, your wordage (e.g., "I thought...") does not help your case. I have only bought to-go bottles once from an NYC bar, but I knew it was going to be high. I asked a friend of mine to keep an eye out for bramble two years ago and she went way passed the limit I told her. You have to understand that high prices is the norm in the city. I'm a Philly kid, and I only pay higher prices when it's a charity event. For example, Framboise for a Cure at Monk's Cafe. Monk's was selling the Oxbow Sasuga at said event, and the bottle proce was ~$30-40. I suppose that's cheaper, but more than I was willing to pay. Cheap bottles in metro areas is the exception, if not, unlikely.

    Sorry, bud.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Seems like I misunderstood the situation and was wrong.

The only experience I really had was the Voodoo Black Magick release at Blue Dog in PA last year -- those bottles were sold to-go for their market price. I assumed (incorrectly) this would be the same thing.

    Thanks again.

off-topic, but i didn't hear it from them, it's just speculation i've heard on hear and elsewhere. seemed like their prices were kind of always on the rise, but when they reconfigured the layout to have more seating area and started selling pints/glasses on draft that's when the bottle prices went through the roof. i haven't bought bottles their in forever, lately when i've been in it's just to laugh at what they're charging for a bottle of something like gillian or bois that i bought for cheap somewhere else already.

whole foods on 3rd opens today though and is supposed to have an awesome beer selection, though!

I wonder if the fact that Bierkraft serves food (and not just beer) matters - that they have a restaurant license and not just a pouring permit for a retail beer shop? No idea.

Heading to WF Brooklyn tonight - exclusive Evil Twin release (and Jeppe will be there tomorrow signing bottles).

Two things though. Blue Dog is in PA which has very different liquor laws plus they are actually a bottle shop inside of a bar. It changes things completely.

I'm not 100%, but the few times I've been to ginger man I'm pretty sure I saw on their chalkboard that they'll give you a % off for buying beers and taking them out of there.

If your going to a bar in NY always expect bar prices. Its a bonus in the first place they let you take it to go.

Also for Bierkraft, you can open the bottles and drink them there, other places I've gone to that pour as well as have bottles but price the bottles at market prices will not allow you to open the bottles on premises.

It would be nice though if Bierkraft worked a bit more like Ginger Man were they charge a premium to drink it there but give a discount to take it to go. Ginger Man offers a 15% discount if you are not opening it there but you need to mention it when you purchase it.

Correct, Ginger Man gives you a 15% discount on all bottles to go...some of their prices are very good and resonable, some are way too high. They are certainly the exception and not the norm in my experience though.

No sir. I tend not to buy Evil Twin beers due to pricing.
