My only problem with Stone's Arrogant Bastard is that they refuse to make it available in 6 packs.

    Try a lot of these.
    http://beeradvocate.com/lists/fame

You will have to trade for some but most are off the shelf in most stores in SD. (Please keep in mind not ALL of these are off the shelf, some are fairly limited and come from Europe or are once a year released across the country)

The meat and potaoes of this list will give you a wide range of styles, profiles, flavors and things you dont like.

You live in SD. Try visiting a lot of the breweries in the area and ordering flights. Small pours of most of the beers on tap, so you can get a lot of beer for not a lot of money. You are in the mecca of Craft beer in SD.

    Enjoy!

    Cheers!

You'll be downing this one without trouble later. A bomber of Arrogant Bastard pairs well with a steak dinner.

Just because I know you'd give the same guff if you knew prior, it's "Deserted Island".

Who's ever heard of a desert in the middle of the ocean?

On topic ass-cover: Just had a Stone Tasting with the regional rep at the local pub's "Meet the Brewer Night", and had some '08 Double Bastard and '09 Oaked Bastard. Both were awesome, and he said that they may be making another batch of Lukcy Batsard. Fingers crossed.

They also clarified something that I did not know, that they don't oak age Oaked AB, they actually make an oak "tea" and add it to the batch, but brew the AB they use for this at a higher alcohol level, so that they retain the same abv percentage when diluted with the oak tea.

Why not settle with the 6 packs of Oaked Arrogant Bastard?

Keeping an eye out for what we all say on here is a good idea, but forming your own opinions is an even better idea. So you tried AB and Hazelnut brown and weren't really a fan of either of them, no big deal, just give it some time and come back to them. I would just say try as many different styles as you can, then decide what you enjoy the most and drink more beers in that style. Your palate will come around, when I first got into beer I hated IPA's, all I wanted to drink were stouts and porters, but now if I could drink IPA's and DIPA's all day long I would. Just give your palate time to adjust. Anyways, welcome to the awesome world of beer!!! Have fun exploring, drink what you like.

    CHEERS!!

BA can show you beers that are generally thought of as being good or excellent, but it's up to you to form your own opinions about them based on your tastes. Don't read reviews and worry about finding all of the flavors that people mention, you'll form your own reviewing style over time. Try as many different beers and styles as you can, and worry about what YOU like/don't like. You're off to a much better start than me - I had my first Bastard after about a year of exploring beer and I didn't like it or understand it per se, but it got me exploring darker beers and stronger/hoppy flavors. Have fun and welcome to the obsession, cheers!

    1. Dammit, internet. You've failed me this time.
    2. Erroneous, it's a continent, as well as a polar, ice-covered tundra-like desert. It's a separate classification: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_desert

However, Merriam-Webster is turning in it's collective grave.

    Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_island#Terminology
Clarifies that it doesn't have to be once inhabited, then deserted, and doesn't have to have the same qualities of a literal desert.

The first time I tried an AB, it was because it was the strongest beer on the beer menu at the British Beer Company in Hyannis. I believe it was 3 or 4 summers ago I enjoyed it then and enjoy it even more as time goes on since it's a great beer, readily available and fairly priced.

My American Heritage Dictionary (4th Ed.) includes this example under the entry for desert: 2. Barren and uninhabited; desolate: a desert island.

    American Heritage can suck it.

Logic defies this definition, and pisses me off. Dang.

Does anybody else get crazy drunk when they have a Double Bastard? I've had a lot of stronger beers but that one messed me up, in a good way.

I'm not sure which is worse: two spaces and no capitalization, or capitalization and no spaces. As with most things, I prefer the middle path. This "freedom" you talk about is a gilded prison. You're merely trading pressing two keys once for one key twice.
