Got a growler fill of this on Friday. Does not fill the void, IMHO.

It’s a hard void to fill. Vallejo was pretty special and I’ve always thought Nelson hops were meant for traditional ipa with neutral yeast. Never been as blown away by hazy Nelson beers as I’ve been by Apline Nelson or great batches of Vallejo.

that said, if course I’m gonna try it. Always on pursuit of my next great Nelson beer

Just echoing the remarks of Catch Hell from others: it's a stellar stout. I initially only got one 2-pack, and went right back up to the bar to snag the other two for the allotment after trying a sample. I also traded away some of my stash for 4 more cans yesterday.

I think the cinnamon really helps the vanilla to not be overwhelming, which is how I felt with Vanilla Benthic (I hated it). Both adjuncts work very well off of each other, the body is crazy thick, and the barrel still comes through on the finish. I'm probably going to trade for more of this, since I'd be really happy having cans readily available for awhile.

If there's a similarity between Benthic & Catch Hell, it's the thick, velvet-y mouthfeel. Quite a treat!

This is why I lick a piece of velvet when drinking Big Hugs.

There's a reason I left that one out!

interesting, i'm usually quite sensitive to vanilla, and I thought VB integrated it so nicely with the coconut, and there was just enough barrel to complement the entire drink. i do agree that the cinammon in catch hell does balance out the vanilla very well, and it's a fantastic stout.

overwhelming vanilla to be would be Goose 2018 vanilla or any vintage of BL Fundamental observation.

I completely agree with 18 BCBS Vanilla, as that beer fresh tasted like pure vanilla extract. I had one around Christmas as well, and while it has definitely mellowed out, I still hated it.

I loved regular Benthic this year, but there was something about Vanilla Benthic that just didn't agree with me. The vanilla overpowered everything else I loved about regular, and it completely turned me off. I know I'm in the minority here, and I get crazy looks when I tell people I hated it.

I actually ended up dumping out around half of the can, and gave the other one to my brother.

He also got my second can of Henna S'mores - that beer is a sweet, unbalanced disaster though

Grabbed a four pack tonight. I enjoyed it. Not sweet at all and pretty good flavor for 5.5%.

Yea. It’s a really quality beer for 9.99, year round. If we are talking value, that’s half acres calling card. They are masters at making 9.99 beers better than anyone else in Illinois
