And what practical function does label artwork based on comic characters perform?

Art doesn't have to be practical and usually isn't. It's art..

So there's no difference between the two marketing approaches. Yet BAs hate one and love the other.

Hey guys, just a hipster douchebag here. I love Half Acre. I appreciate that, on top of great beer, they care about aesthetics. If they can achieve both ends - which they do - I don't see it as a gimmick. Unlike a vortex bottle or a cold-activated label, it's not about obscuring a bad product. It's about adding another component to craft beer.

Remind me to never have a drink with you people.

Wish I could 'like' this remark 1000 times over. What an insufferable lot.

Thanks for the offer, but I drive into the city a couple times a month to pick some up

This would probably be a good thing!
Most of the time consumers will buy beer based solely on the label and artwork and not even care about the actual beer itself.

Perhaps that marketing strategy applies to beer that makes it to the shelf and has to compete for attention, in this case though, let's be real, the bottles will be gone by 4:30pm Friday to those that make it to Half Acre specifically for the release.

In this case yes, but my point was more towards 5thohio's point that label and artwork has no practical function

bar code for scanning at stores, ABV & how many ounces in bottle, GOVT warning to remind pregnant ladies not to drink, possible style-beer description, and name of brewer. There is a practical function to a label but artwork....well we're not cavemen and we do enjoy art & colors. (Hell I visited the Field Museum this weekend and it turns out even the cavemen enjoyed art)

I'm going to be out of town this weekend, which means I will most likely be shut out. I will be buying some Schlafly products if that interests anyone as far as a trade goes.

I don't care if Miller/Coors made it... if it tastes good, I'd drink it. If it tasted really good, I'd buy it again.

Nice assessment though... "hipster yuppies". Sounds like painting with a fairly broad brush.

I was thinking this was a dipa for some reason. Like to try it, but against paying $9/bomber for a ipa. If they did growlers I would get a 32 oz probably. Oh well.
