As the founder of The CANQuest (tm), I feel that it is my duty to make everyone aware of today's momentous holiday! It was on this date (24 January) in 1935 that the first beer in CANs (Kroger's) was made available to the public. They came with pictorial instructions on how to open them (use a church key, double vent) and were quite the innovation. Today's CANs, with their beautifully rendered graphics, definitely deserve some appreciation.

Uh, that was the G. Krueger Brewing Co. of Newark, NJ.

Single vent. Those early "can piercer" openers were large (as illustrated above).

That opener was invented specifically for opening beer cans - common wisdom is that the "church key" nickname was adopted from the earlier term used for these sorts of bottle openers (which resembled a large key):

It's only coincidence but I have no bottles today, only cans. Murphys Pub Draught cans to be precise, after working my way through Oskar Blues Hotbox cans .... Hail aluminum!

I found an unopened pabst in a basement awhile ago with one of those lids. Nobody had the courage to drink it

Close enough. I knew someone would correct me. I really wish that I owned one of those first CANs. I've seen them a couple of times - Jeff Lebo of The House of CANs in York County, PA has both orange & green and Earth, Bread + Brewery in Philly had an orange in a glass case behind the bar the last time I visited.
