Maltmaster420, are there any particular malt-forward regional beers/breweries you would recommend?

Welcome, glad to hear you're enjoying the beer scene. I really can't imagine that anywhere can be a much better place for beer right now than Washington/Oregon.

I know you didn't ask me, but if you are in the Seattle area I'd direct you to Fremont, pick up some KDS (officially named Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Star) now and be watching for Bourbon Barrel Abominable, which I think usually comes out around December--although I think I've still being seeing last year's bottles in certain locations. These are both malt forward and very good. I keep hearing about Black Raven's barleywines and imperial stouts etc. (Great Grandfather Raven, Old Birdbrain etc.) but haven't had any yet, they seem to generally be brewery-only. Also, Mother of All Storms (Oregon) and Arctic Devil (Alaska) are good English barleywines you should watch for. I'm sure there are others that are slipping my mind right now.

    Cheers!

Meanwhile….My friend in Ohio (Cincinnati/NKY) just told me about how he showed up 15 minutes after the start of this sale at a local store only to find out most already gone as there were 35 people lined up an hour before the start….for Three Floyds shelf/semi-regular stuff….an hour before the start.

    The email blast said:

Wow, limit of 1 for a year round IPA? Is Dreadnaught even that big of a deal still? I loved it back in the day but when I had it while visiting Madison last year I couldn't help but mourn for the near $10 I'd spent on the bottle at the bar.

Not to me (the Dreadnaught, that is), but I know it's a highly regarded DIPA, and is sought after. Also, although it's a year round offering (like zombie dust), I think bottles are only released periodically (sort of like Blue Dot), and there are times even at the brewpub when they're out of it (I thinks it's almost always available on tap, but bottles are another matter). So that's probably a factor as well with this ad.

Last time I was at the brewpub (more than a year ago now), I tried it on tap and wasn't hugely impressed. They had both zombie dust 6 packs and Dreadnaught bombers to go, and while I grabbed a 6 pack of the ZD, I couldn't see any reason to get any Dreadnaught. It's a fine DIPA, but I was heading home to the NW, where (IMHO) I could find better or comparable DIPA's, and for less money.

Shrug. As others have mentioned, it's great to live in a part of the world where you can find outstanding IPA/DIPA's without much effort or too great expense.

Thanks for the excellent suggestions. Other seasonal beers of interest are marzens & Scotch ales. What are the best local examples?

I miss my old favorite CBC Bannatyne's and its label:

Just love it living up here.
The great, inexpensive beer is just a small part of what makes the PNW great.

I just saw Arctic Devil, Bourbon Barrel Abominable, and KDS at Chuck's Greenwood after my daughter's ballet rehearsal. And, by the way, you really owe it to yourself to check out Chuck's if you want to give yourself a little beergasm. Huge selection, arguably the biggest in Seattle. Prices are slightly high compared to other places, but nothing outrageous.

As for Scotch Ales, it's not a favorite style of mine but one that I found really interesting was Silver City LeFat. It's kind of a sour, barrel-aged Scotch, so not really a very traditional take on the style. But pretty darn tasty and unique. Not sure if it's available now though. I also just picked up Pike's wood aged Kilt Lifter. No idea if it's any good, but it's local.

I basically just drink Ayinger when I want a good Marzen. One tasty local one is Snoqualmie Harvest Moon, but again I just don't see much reason to drink anything but Ayinger.

One more note: I may be burying the lede here (and maybe I am doing that intentionally), but I understand from a reliable source that Fremont will make Old Bridge Rider again. Still my all-time favorite Fremont beer. Details to follow I'm sure.

Hmm, some of us might have had an OBR on tap today. Might be worth it for ya to walk by on Sunday.

True, or I could walk downstairs to my garage, like I did last Sunday night. As a person who highly values convenience, it's what I love most about bottled beer: you get to drink what you want, when you want, where you want.

It's why I like drinking at bars and breweries; there's always something different, and I don't have to do the dishes.
