My husband really liked this beer, which of course, is a 1X brewing. I'm trying to find a similar brew with reasonable availability near me (ny metro area).

Most of the well-rated scotch ales are from brewers that I don't recognize or don't distribute to NY.

Anyone have a recommendation for a full-bodied scotch ale?

    Thanks....

Haven't tried Great Scott, but try:

    Founders Dirty Bastard
    Orkney Skull Splitter

If he likes those then you should be on the look out for Traquair House as well. Much harder to get but available here and pricey.

I would only recommend Founders Backwoods Bastard if you are interested in a beer that would be crossing over into the territory of the beers that you seem to enjoy... but save that for later.

Both the Sam Adams and Leinenkugel Wee Heavies are surprisingly excellent. In fact, they might be each respective breweries' best beer.

Second the Traquaur House, awesome beer. It's easy to find in my area but nearly $6/bottle.

Never can figure out the distro area for these guys, but if you're anywhere near Syracuse, Middle Ages makes a nice wee heavy called Ye Olde Kilt Tilter. Can usually find their beers at Half Time in Poughkeepsie, too. Not sure if they make it to the city.

Not available in your area, but if you can trade for it, FFF Robert the Bruce is def one of the best I've had. Oskar Blues old chub is pretty good. I cant remember if central waters slainte is any good, but that might be avail in NY. If you can find Moylans, they have one called Kilt Lifter which I enjoyed a lot. I havent had it, but leines' big eddy series does a Wee Heavy as well. Also founders backwoods bastard is a BA Scotch Ale, seasonal to november/december however. Same with Tyranena, they have one called Sheep Shagger and their BA scotch ale called shaggin' in the wood. Oh and almost forgot about Dark Horse Scotty Karate.

EDIT: Also Has he ever had Belgian Strong Dark Ales? They're very malty like scotch ales with that delicious Belgian flavor. Something to consider.

Some good choices posted, I love a good scotch ale and the two that stand out the most in my mind right now are Smuttynose Scotch Ale and the Dark Horse Scotty Karate. Backwoods Bastard is also fantastic but probably wont be able to find that anytime soon.
Also, I bet Harpoon will make the Great Scott again. Usually they make the Leviathan series beers once a year except for the Imperial IPA.

I think I mentioned this before, but I love your avatar. hand banana is likely the best 15 min ever on TV.

Alesmith is definitely around here... Will definitely seek out their wee heavy. I want to avoid trading... Just trying to get the boy a bit more hooked on good beer that's locally available.

Currently, he'd rather make a mojito for himself. :grimacing:

I was just at Beverage Barn Garden City Park and they had Scotty Karate and I think Alesmith's Wee. You can buy singles from the sixers there. Middle Ages is hard to come by around NYC.
