Hello New Englanders. This will be my first visit to Hartford coming up from Philly in next few weeks and looking for some ideas on what kinds of popular beers and breweries I can expect to find at stores up there around this time of year and that is not available to us here in philadelphia. Also any suggestions on what shops and stores I should check out while I'm up there? Thanks

all depends on which days of the week you're coming. you can hit NEBCO and Two Rds an the way up. City Steam is a brewpub in down town Hartford. Plan B, Mcladdens and the half door are all in West Hartford. Willimantic Brewing is a few towns over. Table and Vine is in Ma. but only like 20-30 mins from dwntwn Hartford where you can get a ton of stuff not avail in Ct.

Don't come would be my first answer. BUT if you must, try NebCo if its open. For stores, check out Harvest Wine & Spirits in West Hartford. Good bars include Eli Cannons in Middletown or Birch Hill Tavern in Glastonbury.

I'd also recommend Eli Cannon's if you don't mind the short drive from Hartford--excellent place with one of the coolest bar patios anywhere. Closer to Hartford, I'd especially recommend Plan B and Max's Burger Bar, both good places for beer and burgers in West Hartford. The Half Door on the Hartford/West Hartford line has a good, mostly European beer list as well. City Steam is a brewpub in downtown Hartford, that sometimes has some pretty solid offerings. Don't pass up a chance to visit NEBCO or at least try their beer while you're in the area. It's not beer, but I'd also recommend J. Rene for very good coffee in West Hartford.
