Is it just my imagination, or has Anchor Liberty Ale changed since Fritz Maytag sold the company? The beer just doesn't seem to have the same character it used to.
Haven't noticed any difference in the ones I've had. Quite possible that its your palate that has changed rather than the beer.
Yeah, that's possible. Especially if I'm overthinking things since the company got sold to new owners. One thing's for sure, though. The beer DOES lack the haziness it once had.
Already twittered them on the subject. Will use the contact info on their website later today or maybe tomorrow
I haven't had one in quite a while (shame on me!), but I really hope nothing has changed. I've always thought Liberty Ale was such an overlooked beer.
I just had one for the first time in a while….this is my baseline beer and I buy it by the case…I just re-stocked for the first time in about 6 months and I definitely noticed a difference…it made me google "anchor liberty changed" and find this thread…it tastes a little less hoppy and it has the slightly urine-y smell of the Budweiser factory on the turnpike in northern new jersey (not a good smell)…maybe I got a bad bottle but it was obvious immediately that this particular beer is not what I am used to….
Do you know how to read their bottling code? It's possible that could be an old sample you got. I'll join you in hoping nothing's changed- I've been remiss in picking some up lately as well.
My guess is that you got old beers? I really hate the bottle date system they use; I have on occasion not purchased Anchor beer because while at the store I forgot the stupid code system: “Anchor: Uses a bottling date. The first number is the last digit of the year. The next letter is the month and the last charcter is the day. Months are coded as following: J = Jan, F = Feb, M = Mar, A = Apr, Y = May, U = Jun, L = Jul, G = Aug, S = Sep, O = Oct, N = Nov, D = Dec.The days 1-26 are coded A-Z while days 27-31 are coded with the last digit of the day. Thus 8JT was bottled on January 20, 2008.” Cheers!
Probably your palate has changed or you got some old stock. I don't think Anchor would be changing recipes.
Ditto the above....I bought a mixed case of Anchor products recently and Liberty Ale tasted as great as always! I do not think they would tinker with a 40 year old beer / recipe that much, as it has quite the following...
Wasn't the company's sale five years ago? It seems difficult to meaningfully compare sensory experiences separated by so much time.
