A couple weeks ago I bought a 4 pack of Dirtwolf (had it many times before this and it was amazing) and much to my shock and disappointment it was very bad. Flavor and aroma were waaayyyy off and there was an unusual amount of sediment floating around. I've never had an "infected" beer but this is what I picture. So, I decided to contact the brewery (I wasn't on a quest to get free swag or anything, just figured it was something that they would want to know) and they never responded.... anyone else have a similar problem?

I just bought an extremely fresh 10 day four pack of Dirtwolf that has sediment in the bottom (the whole case had it). I was looking forward to drinking it. I've had plenty of ipas with sediment that were great like heady and Jai Alai. Now this thread has me thinking otherwise.

Have you been drinking a lot of Other Half's Hoppeded? I'm assuming that influenced the title of this thread.

    Bummer about the Dirtwolf.

I've had a brewery not respond after reporting an infection....it usually means I'll never buy their product again.

Considering the thread is seven months old and not a single person commented on having a similar problem, I think you will be fine. My experience with Dirtwolf is there is always sediment in the bottles.

I also noticed the OP posted from Arizona in late June. I don't recall any reports of actual infection in Dirtwolf, so I think the likely culprit is the beer was allowed to spend some time unrefrigerated in a hot environment

    Yeah, sediment is no issue.

I will admit that DW has seemed off the last couple of times I tried it though. It could just be palate-burnout, but I don't know. The first few packs of DW I had last year blew me away...this time around...not so much.

I've always said that DirtWolf was great when it first came out, and then it disappeared for a while and when it came back it wasn't nearly as good.
Hop Ranch was the same this year, I don't know if they've changed the formula or what.

I wonder how many people say their beer is "infected" because they can't admit to themselves that it is just a beer they don't like. It seems like there is an epidemic of people reporting these "infected" beers.

Not like the bottles I got today. It's full of floaties and I've been drinking DW for awhile. I just figured it was a filtration mishap/malfunction. I like floaties in my beer personally. Anyway, It's in the freezer getting a quick chill. I'll know in a bit.

It sounds like someone cried Wolf about an infection and Victory can see through their shenanigans. Hence, no reply.

I contacted Victory once about another matter. They got back to me within a few days and were very professional.

If you don't want to waste and dump a lot of beer, and money. Unfiltered beer is hard to package as you get towards the end of the run and bottom of the bright, cos you have to keep close tabs on the sight glass and shut it down when it changes from normal looking to full on yeast and hop trub and cloudy. That's what you're seeing, and experiencing in the flavor profile.
There's no infection happening in the beer. period.

And on the other hand, there are a lot of breweries that can't admit they send out bad beer. It seems it's automatically assumed someone is trying to get freebies these days if they make a complaint. For the premium breweries are charging, shit needs to be right.

I contacted a brewery once about their corks that were so tight they broke the lip of the bottle. No response on that one.

I always had sediment in longtrail limbo and it was delicious. Had a sixer that didn't have sediment and was really catpissish.

This part of the topic stood out to me as a commercial brewer, so I thought I would respond at least to this little bit...

First though, sediment in a bottle is typically no problem. I do not know for sure, but it sounds like Dirt Wolf is either unfiltered or bottle conditioned. Likely, if the OP's beer was bad it was because the beer sat warm for a period of time and was stale or oxidized. The word infection is very overused (And a pet peeve of mine is that it really should be referred to as a contamination... somewhere in the history of craft beer "infected" became the common term to describe a contaminated beer). Frequently, people throw the word "infected" around to describe a wide variety of problems in beer that are very rarely a true contamination. A lot of times, the e-mails that I get to describe a contamination are very rude and typically the symptoms describe another problem (such as oxidation or drinking a year old IPA) and it is very hard to determine how to respond to those e-mails. A lot of times, the best course of action is to not respond. If you tell me the beer is contaminated and I have lab results saying definitively that it is not contaminated, a response can be very difficult to come up with (Although, if the e-mail is written politely, I do try to find a way to respond in a way that won't make the sender feel dumb or condescending). Also, a lot of times those e-mails get sent to a customer service e-mail address, forwarded to the owner, who forwards to the brewer, and the brewer is busy, means to respond, and forgets (As happens in my case if I don't respond). I know that happens to a lot of brewers that are my friends as well because brewers are very busy in most microbreweries and while we mean well, we sometimes just get overloaded.
