I got 2 bottles of Pliny that were not filled all the way. I walked into a store, picked them up and bought them without noticing. When I was about to drink them I noticed, but unfortunately they were drain pours. I emailed Russian River and they wanted to know which batch I had but I couldn't remember. Vinnie Cilurzo replied personally and offered to send me some Pliny for my troubles, which I though was unnecessary but very awesome. I think the bottles were late April or early May. If anyone has any information that would be really helpful. Here is a picture of the bottle:

    Thanks!

Never. Seems like a QC issue; props to Vinnie for the offer.

Props to Russian River for top notch QC. Vinnie responding in person is awesome.

I've never had a low fill Pliny but if I were in the position of RR I'd do the same thing. Good to hear these stories and not something like " Oh, they were meant to be that full from the start..... also flat"

Wouldn't the breweries with the "top notch QC" be the ones that don't allow short fills to reach the market?

While the Customer Service of quickly responding to consumer complaints and giving refunds or replacements is notable, it's probably easy to help out the under 1% that contacts them or complains but it still ignores all the people who don't bother. And it has the added benefit of good word of mouth via the internet about the "generosity" of the company.

Not to be cynical or anything

Could have been a loose cap and some spillage. If it was a drain pour for Pliny it had to be stale and let in air. Nice of RR to offer the replacement which I gladly would have accepted given the price and how hard it can be to get.

That's what I thought at first but I brought the bottle home in my suitcase and I definitely would have noticed spillage.

Vinny actually replies to a lot of their emails. My friend has emailed Russian River a couple of times with various questions and vinny has responded to all of them.

Not for nothing but how do you ignore those that don't speak up? You can't ignore someone that isn't saying anything.

I've never seen it before, and I've probably handled >100 bottles. I don't think it's common. Could be low fill, could be loose cap, who knows?

Exactly my thoughts. Is it a widespread problem or just a one-off that slipped through the system? That's probably one of the reasons he asked for a batch number. If the OP was the first to make contact, it's a good move to flag/note that batch and see if anymore come in.

slightly off topic here, but I've never had Pliny before and just picked up four bottles for 5 bucks apiece...good price or typical because of all the hype, I thought the price would be so much more.

These things happen with mechanized bottling operartions. But it's pretty surprising the retailer didn't notice. (Or the buyer!) I would think that under normal circumstance the buyer opens the case, notices the bottles are f'd up, and sends 'em back via the distributor.

Anyway, no, it's never happened to me over the course of years worth of blissful pliny drinking.

The only low-fill bottles I've ever found were in a case. That and leaky bottles which caused the whole case to get moldy inside. In that case, you can't see the problem before you get home. It's awesome that he offered to remedy the situation. In my case, I contacted the brewer just because I thought they might want to know about quality problems. But they didn't seem to care.
