I have a Blichmann burner. All has been wonderful except for the last few batches.

Problem: The first use (say, to heat up mash water) is fine. Afterward, when I try to light up for the boil I can only get a token amount of gas flow. After warming the regulator and rapping it against a hard surface and opening/closing, if functions properly until I turn off the gas and have to go through all of these gyrations again.

I’ve been turning the gas off at the bottle, not by turning the regulator all the way down.

Has anyone had this problem and come up with a solution?

    Thanks and Cheers!!!

No experience with that particular burner, but used to use one years ago. Particles can get in the small parts and clog gas flow. Also, sometimes plumbers putty is used instead of Teflon tape at unions, and that can work it’s way into the burner. I would dissemble it completely, give it a good cleaning, let dry and then try it out.

Have you ruled out an overzealous OPD valve on the tank? I rarely use LPG, so I can't comment on it other than to note that others have had a similar problem that required a bit of finesse to get the gas to flow normally. Closing and reopening the valve, as you did, seems to be one of the steps to resolve the problem.

And that's your problem. Turn off the regulator FIRST, then turn off the gas at the cylinder. And when you're lighting it, the regulator needs to be all the way off before you turn the gas on at the tank. Otherwise you'll always have this issue. It's a safety feature of most, if not all, regulators.

    Problem solved!!!

A much more hassle-free black IPA (for lack of a better name) on the way.

Cheers and Happy Holidays / Merry Christmas.
