I thought that it had more of a Citra profile when it first came out but it seems like the hop profile may have changed a bit? Still a fantastic DIPA and one that I always have in the fridge in addition to now Hop Hunter, Celebration, Harvest Series and most everything else that Ken Grossman and team dream up.

Confessions of a happy Sierra Nevada portfolio drinker. @sierranevadabill any thoughts on Torpedo?

Torpedo was one of my favorites for a long time. Haven't had any since last year sometime, not sure why, just got onto other stuff I guess. In the interest of science I now must get some to conduct my own test. I am particularly fond of the 16 oz cans. I'm glad you brought this up...!

There isn't a beer in a grocery store in my entire state. God Bless Pennsylvania!

Not true any longer, at least on this side of the state, and many grocery stores have been in them now.

Compared to 200+ years of them being in existence, that is nothing.

Yeah, but I wonder if Sierra Nevada would do that...

If Torpedo has changed, I will cry like a baby. I really enjoy that beer, especially at the price point.

I agree, but a good brewer will know how to compensate for variances and still produce a consistent product. SN is an older, larger, established brewery with some highly skilled brewers. They definitely have the chops to turn out consistent beer.

Sucks is not the same beer it was the first year it came out. It has a different ABV too. Used to be a cat piss beer but I bought it a few weeks old recently and it was far from cat piss at all, it was quite malty as well. Sucks is no longer on my list of beer I want.

Torpedo was a great beer but have not had it recently. Many beers change for me but I have to say sucks is not even close, can't be the same beer. 60 minute and SNPA used to be great hoppy beers but I can't drink them any more. 60 is way too malty and SNPA is just a blah nothing taste. Those two I attribute to my taste changing.

    Enjoy

I've been drinking it right along. If there has been a change (which I doubt), then it has been negligible. I love the richness of Torpedo, combined with the strong pine flavor. The texture and appearance complement the flavor perfectly. I had one last night and it was as delicious as ever. Also appreciate that it now comes in cans and I can keep more in my refrigerator hidden under the cold-cuts drawer.

I also would not classify Torpedo as a modern IPA. Or if you want to call it modern then you have to classify the IPAs of the last couple years as post-modern.

So nothing has changed in the world of IPAs in 7 years? I would say tastes and production have shifted significantly towards dryer versions of the style. And late hop additions have approximately quadrupled. The definition of an IPA remained relatively static over 200 years; in the past 7 years it most definitely has not.

Yes, of course Torpedo has changed. So have every other Sierra Nevada beer since they've been brewing in NC. But the real answer is: what is now in Torpedo cans, bottles and kegs is really a secret formula that Sierra Nevada is doing market research on and this thread will certainly help that cause.
