I just bought a sixer of southern tier 2xipa and it just doesnt taste good. Upon inspection (I realize i should be more attentive) I see the bottle on date is 12/06/13. Is this a buyer beware situation? I will definitely pay more attention in the future but should I return it? It tastes like no other ipa ive ever had and not in a good way and im not exactly wealthy.

I tried to return budweiser lime-a-rita but they wouldn't take alcohol back.

I returned Stone Crime and Punishment after looking at the reviews and realizing I paid $20 each for 0.5L bottles.
I returned Oakshire Hellshire II after I drank one and learned that it was infected (per the brewery).
I really appreciate Whole Foods' return policy.

This was also the first bottle..could it be a bad bottle? Did I mess up my pallette by drinking a storm king first?

Many times. Even in the best run pubs there is an occasional below par pint. A quiet word, the beer is taken off and a replacement pint is in my hand.

I returned a six pack of Sam Adams Boston Ale after I opened it and there was mold around the lip of the bottle and it smelt pretty nasty. Store gave me my choice of any other 6 pack.

I try to stay local and its a small liquor store. Im going to try and return the other 5 and if they dont I will just stick with the less convenient chain store with the better selection. The storm king also had a 2013 date but was refrigerated and was still delicious. This is definitely a live and learn situation for me. Check those dates!

I have returned beer, yes, but rarely. However, the items were just undrinkable and the place had no problem letting me have something else for equal value, or refunding my purchase.

I bought a six pack of Troegs Perpetual IPA that tasted spicy and quite bad. I contacted the brewery, who recognized the problem and they set up for me to return the 5 I had left to the store I bought it at for a replacement 6 pack.
That was the only time I've returned beer to a beer shop.

The times I've purchased something past it's prime, I've chalked it up to a learning experience and moved on with my beer life just a little wiser.

No, I haven't returned beer. And five months doesn't seem old enough to me to return a beer, even a double IPA, especially for a small liquor store. If a beer were obviously infected, and a brewery put out word about this, then maybe. Otherwise, no.

Ive heen drinking craft beer for 5 yrs and only returned beer once. Well actually I exchanged it because I bought the wrong one. I wont return beer because its old or becuase of poor reviews (althought I tend to check the reviews pior to buying.

If you are going to return because of a quality issue, fine. If you think it is too old at just under four months, maybe not.

Beer should be no different than any other purchase; if it's unsatisfactory, then you shouldn't be obligated to keep it.

Absolutely. Had some skunked Ruination once... Inexpressibly putrid. Got two fresh packs out of it.

I've returned a few 6 packs that were way out of date. I know in the first place I should have looked, but being in a rush I didn't. A store should not be selling beer that is 8-10 months passed its best by date. Very poor customer service. Suffice to say I do not shop at that store anymore.

I've bought many beers that were 5, 6 months old and definitely will not return them. It's my fault. Lesson learned. But when I go to a store I don't expect to pick up a 6 pack of Founders Centennial IPA, for instance, in 2014 that was bottled in October 2012.

I wouldnt think 4 months was too much either. The best way I can describe the taste and smell is like clay. Its definitely not a good description but when I try to think of the way it tastes its the best I can come up with. I understand live and learn but why shouldn't the store be made aware of this? If its the customers job to be aware of dates then maybe they should be more prominent on the bottle. Obviously stone gets this. Like I said before, was it just a bad bottle? Should I crack another?

I have only returned beer to the shelf. One time I asked how long the ipa was sitting on the shelf for a particular IPA and the employee said why does it matter.

I just returned beer for the first time a few days ago. The criteria I would use is, is there something wrong with it? If it's just a little past prime so it tastes too malty, you should have looked at the date. If you drink the beer all the time and it tastes off or skunked or something, return it. Age doesn't matter. If the beer isn't right, it isn't right. If it's just not as good as it would have been two months ago, that's your fault for buying it.

BTW, the beer I returned was only a month and a half old, but it was something I drink enough to know what it should taste like. It was undrinkable. It felt good to trade it for something drinkable, but I wouldn't do it unless there is something egregious about the beer.
