I don't get your logic here. We all agree that the beer is not out of date enough it shouldn't be on the shelf (little over 4 months for ST 2XIPA isn't crazy old) , so why would you blame the shop and no longer go there exactly?

If it's driving you that nuts, contact ST and give them your thoughts.

I like Monk's Cafe... "you don't have to like it, but you do have to pay for it."

I can't help myself..I've returned it at my favorite tap room...But I gave it back through a door that read Men.
Only way I'll return a Confluence Beer! All kidding aside, I have never returned a beer in my 40 years of drinking.

well thats a little different. If ya buy a beer thats fresh and you simply don't like it then suck it up, drink it, and get a sample next time. However, buying a beer at a store that you presume to be fresh, but is well past its prime or infected shouldn't be at the consumers loss.

Often. If I'm served a pint of vinegar, I take it back.

I returned a case once. I opened it, and saw that one of the bottles was broken.

As a retailer, I will respectfully remind you that many states (including ours) forbid stores from taking what is considered a perishable product (beer) back. That doesn't mean your are SOL. Any store worth it's salt will address the issue with replacements or another solution that the consumer finds acceptable.
As to contacting a supplier, or brewer before the store...all 3 parties just want to make you happy. I wouldn't be offended where the knowledge of a problem came from, and again, all 3 parties just want you to be pleased.
If the brewer or the supplier is jumping down the retailer's throat (or vice versa), there was a problem with that relationship before you even walked in the door with your complaint.

I mean your post just gives credence to my current buying habits. I found an awsome liquore store that I make a pilgrimage to more often than I probably should. This store (much like some others in other areas) allows me to make a mixed six pack of whatever - whether its 12 oz, 16 oz., or 22 oz. it doesn't matter and I can mix it. It ends up costing more, but I am willing to bet that it costs less than buying individual six packs of these beers and not liking them. At least by doing this if I don't like it its only one beer and I'm not stuck with 5 more. To date I've only poured one down the drain.

I got a Cantillon once and returned it. Shit tasted like horse blanket. I thought they were supposed to be a high class brewery. Anyone else had this problem.

I did because I was new and I knew nothing about checking for freshness. I felt cheated. The next day I read something here that told me that was my responsibility and I never did it again =)

Just once. Returned my set of Black Damnation II and III that were $43 a piece and both sour gushers. Got store credit not problem at my local shop. Someone else I talked to with the same beers and same issue tried taking back to another store where he got them but was not as fortunate with the refund.

For a cheap IPA like that I suspect you are SOL

I'm normally a bit shy about that sort of thing, but I've taken beer that was undrinkable back to the bar.

I retuned an outdated six pack a few weeks ago. I didn't have an issue. The bottle shop was gracious and apologetic. It should be assumed that outdated beer is removed by the proprietor in a timely manner. Most craft breweries take exception to places selling their beer out of date.

The only way I came close was at "The Score" in Grand Rapids. I ordered a Citra Pale Ale by Odd Side Ales and you could tell it was from a very old keg... I was probably not going to say anything, but was just chatting with my friend about how old it tasted and the server was paying attention. He asked if something was wrong with the beer, so I told him it tasted like butter, how that beer usually tastes when it sits for a long time. He changed it out for a Backwoods Bastard and I was ecstatic! Wonderful customer service the few times I've been there.
