IMO the bottle list pricing is pretty good. All the non cellar options are very competitive for bar pricing And only slightly above what you would pay at grocery/liquor store.

The cellar listings are expensive but I have no issue with that considering these are not things you can get on the shelf or have been able to get on the shelf for a while. Special rare offerings that rightfully so fetch a premium price. Will I pay that much for those bottles? Probably not but I don't think it's unfair in anyway. If someone can find another bar offering those bottles to compare prices then we can start debating but I don't know of any place offering those type of bottles.

While I don't disagree with you, you also have to keep in mind that not everyone has the fortune of traveling to these destination bars. This state has a huge way to go before even approaching any world class beer bars IMO.

3 - 5 times mark up seems about right.

Oh, I completely agree, but Hay Merchant has to start somewhere. While I don't see myself wanting to purchase any of those bottles, there is absolutely a market for it. The majority of people do not care to chase trucks, trade beer, or read BeerAdvocate.

My point is that people on here seem to get outraged by common practices in nearly every other state. A FIFTEEN DOLLAR BOMBER? A BAR THAT SELLS AN UNCOMMON BOTTLE FOR DOUBLE, OR EVEN TRIPLE THE PRICE?? THE SKY IS FALLING!

I have some extra DR10 that has been at cellar temps if you're looking...

Double is fine... DR10 for $17 is crazy IMHO.

OG Black Metal can still be found for retail.

Also, 3x markup isn't unreasonable, but DR10 sold for $16 a sixer. Which means that we're talking over 6x markup. That's pretty intense. Not arguing either way, but daaaamn nonetheless.

Bars usually markup wine and beer in bottles by 50% from what I see. At about $3 a bottle retail?? Add in around 3 years of aging and a $1-2 for each year of age, I can see where the $17 price comes in. I'd rather give someone my bottle though than watch them pay that much.

I was going to say the same thing. Wines have always been marked up, sometimes up to 2 or 3 times. But that's how it's been and people are willing to buy a bottle at dinner. It's just with beer being marked up that much it comes as a shock since most of us actually know how much a bottle of beer goes for in a bottle shop. AVG wine drinker has no idea how much that bottle really is across the street. When I sold wine at Specs and people came in wanting a wine they had at dinner the night before, they were always shocked at the price difference.

I will be disappointed if there's a crazy markup for cellared kegs. They've never charged more than $1 per ounce for anything they cellared before.

They've busted out vintage kegs, one particular keg was Curieux. I think it was at a reasonable price.

I am well acquainted with bottle prices across the country. $45 for Wild Devil, first batch Black Metal, and $17 for DR 10 is outrageous. A bar can charge what ever they want, and if people pay it then I guess it is not out of line. I don't expect Hay Merchant to defend anything, it is their bar, and just a discussion on bar pricing. So they don't need to get all Friendly on us:wink: Though any reasonable beer geek should laugh at those prices, because I would hope they know better. The rest of the bottle list is priced reasonably IMO.

Yeah, as a wine guy (sometimes) and a buy a bottle of champagne or vodka at a club guy (always) I get it, you get a bottle of Grey Goose that is worth 300$ to them or wine that is 12$/glass and they sale it cheaper $150/$30 then I am fine with it.....

Speaking of bottle prices on Westheimer, Eater Houston published a quick look at the new Camerata wine bar. The beer list is at the back of this menu. It's a strong list, but damn it's expensive. Check out the difference between the same beers at Hay Merchant and Camerata: 330ml Orval is $10 at HM, $13 at Camerata. 750ml Poperings Hommel is $13 at HM, $21 (!!!) at Camerata. Yikes.

That's because they know if a non-wino is at their business they haven't got a choice.
