I'm trying to come up with a hop schedule for a XPA/Session IPA using HBC 438. I want your thoughts. Intend is to showcase the new hop. Here is the thing I only have 4 ounces (got them at the NHC in San Diego) of HBC 438. I'm doing a hop bursting method (all late hop additions). On hand I also have 2 oz of El Dorado hops. Some recipe background: 5.5 Gallons OG: 1.055 (Mostly 2 row, Marris Otter and a touch of Crystal 15) SRM: 6ish IBU target: 45ish Hops: HBC 438, 16.6% AA, 4 oz El Dorado, 13% AA, 2 oz Hop Schedule (IBUs based on Rager) @ 20 min, 1oz, HBC 438, 22 IBU @ 10 min, 1oz, HBC 438, 13 IBU @ 10 min, 1oz, El Dorado, 10 IBU @ 0 min, 2oz, HBC 438, 0 IBU @ 0 min, 1oz, El Dorado, 0 IBU
I personally feel that adding the hop you want to showcase early on in the boil will mute its characters. I would add el dorado earlier using it primarily for bitteress. Then layer some of the 438 in late boil/whirlpool then dry hop with it also.
I got 2 oz at the presentation, then another 2 oz at the vendor booth. I got lucky on the vendor ones, just happen to be there at the right time.
4 oz. even for a session IPA will be a stretch. I'd consider making a smaller batch with half (2 oz) used for dh and the other half late in the boil..
It has been released to the LHBS. You might find some as HBC-438. Jason Perrault said they will have to find a better name if they do a commercial release next year.
darn...all I got was Jarrylo... interested to hear results as well. Personally would have done like a 2oz in whirlpool & 2oz in DH with a touch of something for bittering. Keeping it on the mellow side for abv & hops to let the hbc 438 pop out.
Intense tropical and stone fruit. There is a sweetness to it as well and it is not from the gravity (SG: 1.057, FG: 1.012). It is as though the beer didn't finish low enough. I entered it in a competition and will be judged this Saturday. I'll post the scoresheets when I get them.
I just bottled my IPA with 2 oz late addition and 2 oz dry hop with HBC 438. I wouldn't change this description at all to tell you how mine turned out, although I don't feel the sweetness hinted at from the hop flavor hurt the finish at all. I laid down a solid 40 IBU with Chinook to start the boil, so I'm sure that helped.
Doing mine today, for the boil, 11 gallons. The RR NHC recipe that was in the presentation was used. 0.5 oz. at 90 1 oz at 15 3.5 oz for 45 min whirlpool Another 5 oz will be split for two dry hop additions, as per the recipe.
Here you are. You need to BA an AHA member, log in, and 2015 presentation, "Brewing with experimental hops...", slides towards the bottom. http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/how-to-brew/resources/conference-seminars/
