Hey so work is bringing me to Cincinnati next week. Staying about a block from the stadiums in the Hyatt. Looks like I'll have a couple evenings to check places out, no car, and not into taking an uber too far. Anything decent in walking distance? I saw Rock Bottom, but nothing else for sure beyond that. Anyone interested in trading for some Minneapolis stuff if I bring it?
I'm a Cincy native who hasn't lived there in a while but I know you can hop onto the street car (Cincinnati Bell Connector) to Rhinegeist Brewery, which is a pretty cool venue and decent beers. The Taft Ale House is along the way too. There is a 16-Bit Barcade around that area (Over the Rhine) as well. Just make sure to pay for the street car, the cops have no problem giving out $100 tickets for a ride that costs $2. The Christian Moerlein beer garden is south of your hotel between the stadiums. Urban Artifact, Listerman's, and MadTree are popular destinations but not situated downtown. I am sure a Cincy local can provide far better information.
I'm a Cinci local. If you are looking for a great place to eat and a good taplist I cannot recommend Pontiac enough. They usually have hoof hearted and listermann on tap, as well as decent barbecue. It's located in OTR so it would be a relatively short uber ride. From there, you can easily walk to Taft's and Rhinegeist. Personally, my favorite spots in the city are about 15-20 minutes driving from downtown. Those would be Streetside, Brink, and Listermann. If you are interested in NEIPAs, pastry stouts, and sours those are the spots to check out. (all three of these places conveniently have crowler machines). Urban Artifact gets a lot of attention for their heavily fruited kettle sours, but in my opinion have the worst service of any brewery in the city. If you are in that area I'd head over to higher gravity, which is a block away from Urban to grab their beer in cans (they sell singles of everything). They also have a solid taplist and you can bring food inside. The problem with our city is that almost everything is 15 minutes away by car from each other. But if you're ok with ubering around you can really find some awesome stuff. Other great food spots with solid taplists in the city would be: The Comet, Northside Yacht Club, The Eagle, and Senate. If you are trying to trade some stuff in town I am sure people would be interested. There are some facebook groups dedicated to beer talk in cincinnati that would be a good place to post about that if you are looking to reach more locals.
Uber is pretty cheap in Cincinnati. Someone above mentioned Christian Moerlein bier garden. That's not a thing. There is the Christian Moerlein Lager House on The Banks, which has a decent selection, plus their own stuff (which I'll be the first to say, is mediocre at best). They also have a brewery in OTR, up near Rhinegeist. Not in the best part of town, but it's a cool little spot. It's walking distance, I walked there from where you are staying during Bockfest a few weeks ago. Rock Bottom is ok. It's a chain, the food is meh. Rhinegeist is the biggest brewery in the city. You could take the Streetcar up there, or walk, it's not that bad of a walk, but gets a little shady from 14th street to Findlay Market area. Tafts Ale House is also not far from Rhinegeist and the Christian Moerlein brewry and has a lot of good options, it's a really cool place, I wouldn't skip it. I would echo Pontiac for their beer selection, but their food is not great IMO, The Eagle across the street has much better food, beer selection is meh. Pies and Pints at the Banks usually has a pretty good local selection. The Party Source across the river has an incredible beer selection. You aren't going to do any better than that, if you are looking for stuff to take home. MadTree is awesome don't skip it. It's worth the Uber up. Really cool spot, they usually have 32 of their beers on tap. They have really good pizza there as well. It's my favorite spot. It's about 6 miles away for reference. Unfortunately, I'll be in Cleveland next week for work, or I would absolutely show you around a bit.
I was browsing the thread and was really happy to read your recommendation for Higher Gravity. This is the first I've heard of it, but it sounds exactly like what I've been looking for...a shop that sells EVERYTHING as singles. I've struggled to find a shop w/ a decent singles selection. Can't wait to check it out!
