I’m gonna travel around Norway in April on both sides of Easter. What do y’all think I need to concern myself with beer and beer+X flavors wise?
Hey there. No need to be concerned Despite the prices I think you should do your best to try and get to taste some of the beers with true Norwegian ingredients in them, or inspired by the traditional brewing methods. Plenty of good fruit beers with Norwegian fruit, and if you get your hands on beers from breweries like Brulandselva or Bygland you will get to try beers inspired by our traditional beer history. This you will not find other places. Other than that there is plenty of good beers to find, breweries like Lindheim, Monkey Brew and Salikatt should be on the list of "hype beers" packed with flavors worth checking out. Happy hunting!
If you're going to Trondheim, you should check out Stjørdalsøl, a certain kind of beer brewed on local traditions, the old way. Like the Vikings did it. Make contact with Stolt Bryggeri in Stjørdal, near Trondheim airport. They will guide you further. There are estimated about 50 farm breweries around that small town, involving about 500 people in total. Also, in Trondheim, get in touch with their major brewery EC Dahls. They cooperate with and are happy to share knowledge about the microbreweries in the town. I believe there are about ten of them, including Monkey Brew.
I forgot to mention in my last post, that EC Dahls is associated with Brooklyn Brewery, so probably worth mentioning that you're from New Jersey.
Craft beer scene is qood in Norway. Could you be more specific in where in Norway you are going? Would make it more easier to give you better suggestions.
Hey, if you wanna stop by and chat with an industry guy from NJ, you can stop by Beer Flag in Oslo or our bar, Bar Flag. I sent you a pm with my email just hit me up I'm here all Easter. Cheers! Matt
Aass Bryggeri Visit Drammen (about 40 minute drive south-west from Oslo) and Norway's oldest existing brewery. Also the last of the "big" breweries not yet sold to a big international group and owned by 5th generation of the Aass-family. They also have the "Pilotbryggeriet", a kind of craft beer brewery within the big brewery.
If you are heading as far south as Sandefjord, try the beers from Fjordfolk. Great little brewery with a range of craft beers of different styles.
In Rogaland county, and more specific the city of Stavanger, make sure to sample the beers from Lervig, Salikatt, Jåttå Gårdsbryggeri and Rygr. Cardinal pub will be your best starting point, there are also other good pubs within easy walking distance.
