I'm headed to Savannah this weekend for another youth soccer tournament. A few of the other dads and I have made it a point to try and hit breweries and bottle shops in the towns and cities our kids play in. Anyone have recommendations on must hit spots?
Crystal Beer Parlor was really good - food was great and the tap list was really good when I stopped by. A good friend recommended Moon River but I did not get the chance to check it out.
moon river is pretty good, but nothing too exceptional. if you like meads, they have a good selection, as does the savannah bee company.
GA brewery disclaimer: You can't buy a pint or stock up on beer at a brewery. You'll typically pay for a tour which will come with up to 36oz of on-site samples and/or 72oz of souvenir beer to go. Cost usually starts at $12 and goes up from there. Might also include a glass to keep. Our laws our messed up. Coastal Empire, Service and Southbound are the local breweries. All of them will have packaged offerings at the local beer stores and bars. Habersham's is usually recommended as a good beer store, though since I live in Georgia I haven't visited a beer store in Savannah. Moon River is the local brewpub and has pretty solid offerings. Brewpubs can sell you beer by the pint (no carry out beer). They have a large beer garden and supposedly the brewery/restaurant is haunted. Crystal Beer Parlor and The Distillery are the two most popular beer bars and will both have a good tap list full of GA offerings.
I always try and stop at Moon River. That new beer garden they added just adds to the fun. Besides the above, I would suggest the Distillery (good food to boot), Churchill’s and Molly McPhersons.
My wife & I visited Savannah last month and had a great time. Friday evening, we hit Moon River for dinner and split the house flight (11 beers) and then each got a beer 'to go'. During the day Saturday, we went to 'Hops and Barley' beer store and talked to the owner for a bit. We picked up some nice bottles that we couldn't get back home. Later that evening, we went back to Moon River and sat outside this time and drank at the bar. It was nice to order the beers that we liked from the previous evening, while watching a LOT of college football. We didn't hit the breweries, which was fine since we already get some of those beers in Charleston. BTW, I'm also one of those crazy soccer dads who does a LOT of traveling for my boys!
Green Truck Pub and The Distillery have the best beer menus. Pretty sure I am walking over to The Distillery for lunch today, so I can check out their special beer menu and report back.
Here is a decent break down of the craft beer scene in Savannah, at least IMO. Breweries For breweries, they typically open a few times per week for tours and tastings for a short two to three hour window. For ~$10-15 you can sample up to 36 ounces of beer (per GA law) and in some cases take home some beer. I have honestly not made it to Coastal Empire yet, they just recently expanded their tour hours. Service Brewing has a cool military inspired taproom and typically 6-8 beers on tap. Southbound has a social and more eclectic vibe (IMO) and also typically has 6-8 beers on tap (I believe they now keep their tap list and to go list updated on their website). Coastal Empire Beer Co. 79 Ross Rd Savannah, GA 31405 http://coastalempirebeer.com/ Tours / Tastings Thursday - 5:00PM to 8:00PM Friday - 5:00PM to 8:00PM Saturday - 1:00PM to 4:00PM Service Brewing Co. 574 Indian Rd Savannah, GA 31401 http://servicebrewing.com/ Tours / Tastings Thursday - 5:30PM to 7:30PM Friday - 5:30PM to 7:30PM Saturday - 2:00PM to 4:00PM Southbound Brewing Co. 107 E. Lathrop Ave Savannah, GA 31415 http://southboundbrewingco.com/# Tours / Tastings Wednesday - 5:30PM to 7:30PM Thursday - 5:30PM to 7:30PM Friday - 5:30PM to 7:30PM Saturday - 2:00PM to 4:00PM Brewpubs / Restaurants Moon River is the only brewpub in town and the food is decent to above average. The beer garden is a great way to enjoy the outdoor weather (assuming it isn't between May to August when it is often miserably hot outside) and a beer brewed in the pub. Crystal Beer Parlor and The Distillery are the best historic district craft beer list / good food combinations (again, IMO). If you want to venture a little farther from downtown then Green Truck Pub is also a good option. There is a World of Beer in Savannah and in Pooler if you are just looking for a large draft list, but neither are often that impressive (they keep their tap list updated on the website and app, so it is easy to check if they have something of interest). They seem to be getting more and more of the harder to find and limited distribution beers for the Savannah market and they do a great job of updating their Facebook and Instagram accounts with the latest arrivals. Yesterday, cake was on the big bottle list at The Distillery for $22. Might be worth a stop for just that.
Hey guys, heading down to Savannah for the weekend, found this thread and plan on checking out a bunch of these places. Coming from Charlotte any specific beers I should be looking for that I can't get in NC? Thanks in advance!
