I have a work trip to Belgium in September. I've always been an IPA and Imperial Stout guy, but plan on getting into some of the local beers while I'm over there. I'll be in Brussels and Leuven for the entire time and won't be able to do any other traveling. So what are some things I should look for at a pub? What are some things I should bring back in the luggage that I won't find in the States? Thanks for any help.
I recommend a trip to Cantillon and bring back some Gueuze or any of their lambic, actually. If you aren't a fan of sour you can still find a wide variety of things that aren't available stateside in Brussels. I had a great time at Delices et Caprices http://www.the-belgian-beer-tasting-shop.be/?lang=en - they are very friendly and have some interesting beer in a small space.
Check the Benelux forum for much, much more. But I should say, if it's an early exploration of the Belgians, then you can find all sorts of goodies in pretty much any decent-looking bar. Anywhere you stop in will have a few Trappists. An Orval and a Rochefort 10 will chime with your IPA and IS thing while sending you off in new directions.
... Oh but this reminds me of a good piece (here http://www.belgianbeerandfood.com/magazine-articles/setting-the-record-straight) of a Belgian brewer trying to reclaim the mantel of the IPA. (Whateva!)
Well I'm over here and having a great time. Anyone have any suggestions for Bottle Shops in Brussels? I plan on going to the one @Slatetank suggested. Any others to bring bag some goodies?
Glad to hear it. If you're stuck in the center, after D&C, you could also hit Biertempel on Marché aux Herbes/Grasmarkt, somewhat more selection, no tasting, nice people but less conversational, and they could probably charge more for the standard fare than they do. But for Trappists or some of the other more familiar names, hit a grocery store for lowest prices. If you're elsewhere in Brussels and get a chance to post back here, we might have other ideas. Enjoy...
There's probably a great bottle shop in Leuven, and I wouldn't know. But, are you mobile? In Winksele, not far outside, I love ABS -- listed on this site, and also check out its affiliated B&S drinks that claims similar stock.
