I'm heading to Chicago next weekend, Thurs-Sun with the wife and kids. Staying in 'burbs (Schaumburg) but will be in city Friday and Saturday. Planning to hit some beer stores at some point. Would really love to land some Zombie Dust but will not have chance to hit the FFF brew pub. What are my best options as far as finding some bottles? Do the suburbs usually get in any? Is there a certain day of the week that ZD usually lands in stores? I'm guessing it is still flying off pretty fast still? Any other local gems I should be on the lookout for? Are any Goose Island sours out now? Have not seen any in Iowa this year, and don't think we will according to distributor. Thanks for any suggestions!
I usually find Zombie Dust during the week on a Wednesday. Not sure what kind of luck you'll have on the weekend. If you're really trying to get it, I might be able to see if I can grab a 6 pack earlier in the week and try to meet you on the weekend. I'd look out for Pipeworks current releases, as well as some of the recent Revolution stuff (1Z ENUFF, Fist City).
Binny's is a must stop in the area... I picked up a ton of Pipeworks bombers there and Three Floyds stuff is all over. I only found a single bottle of ZD though, missed it at the brewery by a day... But they did get Gumballhead which was awesome, got two cases of that!
Foremost Liquors in Rolling Meadows has a great beer selection and it's only a mile away from the new Bigby's Pour House.
The Binnys in Schaumburg usually gets a case or so a week depending on the week. Foremost is great as well. If you are not looking to go too far from Schaumburg, check out the Beer Market. Large selection for a small bar and if you hit it at a good time, they will have good beers.
I'll be in Pingree Grove in two weeks visiting the wife's family. I've never been there or to the Chicago area. Other than 3 Floyds or Bineys, any bottle shops or must hit places out that way? I'm going to be bored out of my mind for a few days. At least I talked my wife into leaving after Kuhnhenns Summer Solstice release.
I'd try to hit Solemn Oath in Naperville. Two Brothers in Warrenville is also out in the western suburbs. I'll second the vote for Foremost Liquors, as well as Binny's in Oak Brook, among others. Lots of good stuff; I always come back from Chicago with a bundle of bottles.
Check out Plank Road Tap Room http://www.plankroadtaproom.com if you are out there as its about a 15 minute drive from where you are at. If you are willing to drive about 25 minutes, you can check out the Binnys in St. Charles and Penrose Brewery in downtown Geneva.
Hey, I'm out in Schaumburg. Your best bet at dust is the smaller stores. Foremost Liquors in Rolling Meadows is great. If you want to make a drive, Ardmore Liquors has a great selection in Villa Park. Those are two stores I rely on for selection. The big stores are Binny's in Schaumburg or Bloomingdale and Armanetti's in Roselle. They all have a solid selection too. Armanetti may have singles of Zombie Dust for sale. As for bars, Thursday's are great for a good deal. On Thursday, Bulldog ale house in Roselle does $2 pints, any draft. There's been times where they have has Dust on tap and I took full advantage of that. Beer Market in Schaumburg, Durty Nellies in Palatine, Tap House Grill in Palatine, Bigby's in Palatine and Rolling Meadows all offer the best craft selections in the Schaumburg Area. Just a note as well - Utilize beer menus to find beers. I know in some areas they don't use it too much, but alot of places in Chicagoland area keep it updated. It will make your search much easier. Good luck and enjoy the city!
Everyone has already given you plenty of good options, so I'll just say: Keep your eye out for Beer Hates Astronauts from Half Acre (if you get into a Binny's or whatever). I don't know when distro starts (it was at the brewery this past Friday), but it's a phenomenal beer kind of in the Zombie Dust vein, and is usually only made once a year, so if you can find it, scoop it up.
Hey thanks everyone for the the tips! I do have that beermenus app on my phone so will try that out while I'm there. Will definitely be checking Binny's out, and hopefully other stores if I have time.
