Court Liquors in Long Branch is really nice. They have a great selection of Imports, as well as solid selection from NJ's great distribution of American Craft. You're probably a little over half an hour from there. If you have some more time to kill, i would head to Twin Light Taphouse in the Highlands. The owners great, and they have a well thought out taplist, as well as amazing food. Carton brewing is also about 5 minutes away, where you can do a tour and tastings as well as growler fills. Shoot me a message if you have any questions or want to meet up.
Definitely agree with Dan that Twin Light and Carton are a must if you can make it out that way on the weekend. I've made your trip a lot of times for work and I've always made it a point to stop by Decicco's in Ardsley, NY...not too far out of the way and has a great selection.
Shop Rite on RT9 or Max's in Rain tree shopping center off of 537, both have pretty good bottles but unfortunately Freehold doesn't really have all that great of places. Theres some nice places if you venture out about 30 mins from the area.
Make sure you hit Kane Brewing in Ocean Township. Only Friday and Saturday tasting hours but damn the beers are good. Carton makes some tasty stuff too but Kane just makes amazing beers.
Cranbury BuyRite is less than 20 miles west of Freehold- pretty easy trip > Rt. 33W to 133W to 130N. (If your trip down is NJ Tpk Exit 8 to Rt. 33E to get to Freehold, it'd be even easier to hit Cranbury on the way in or out, using Exist 8A). Otherwise, not yet mentioned, there's the Wegman's liquor store in Manalapan on Rt. 9, only a miles or 2 outside Freehold. Debatable if it's "above average", however, but you could find something not available in MA.
If you are heading down 95 to the NJ Turnpike, your directions probably have you get off the turnpike at exit 9 which is 18 south. Right on 18 South there is a store Marketplace Liquors that would be on your route that has alot of craft bombers, as well as one of the better selections of Belgians and Germans you will find in Central NJ. They do an excellent job of making sure they have all of the big new releases. They also have a huge selection of single malts...
