Heading to Hayward from NW Chicago suburbs (90-94-53 most of the way) tomorrow. Unfortunately got vetoed by everyone else in the car for a detour to NG or Central Waters...Any bottle shops highly recommended along the way or possibly even in Hayward? Any Belgian Red anywhere? Already have some wild sour and Berliner but wouldn't mind some more for the long Labor Day weekend. Thanks in advance!

Let me guess, you'll be hauling a boat? FISHTAB's. Just park your boat trailer correctly, don't ask us where the fish are (we aren't going to tell you), and if you have kids that are tubing stay away from the folks fishing. Now that I've said my piece, let me help you on the beer side of things:

If you are looking for the run of mill New Glarus stuff, stop at the new Gordy's in Rice Lake. This place is fairly new, so I don't have an address, but here's some accurate directions, in an old fashion manner. Get off 53 in Rice Lake on the first exit coming from the south (exit 140, Cty O). Take the road into town, you'll pass a Menards, Applebee's and and bunch of stores, restaurants, ect. Go all the way until you reach Hwy SS (or Main Street, depending on your GPS). This is either the third or fourth stop light. Essential keep going straight, because the road your on runs into a dead end, and the grocery and liquor store are at the end of the dead end. Hopefully that is clear enough, but once you get to SS the place is hard to miss (across the street, and to the left).

As of Saturday when family stopped by they had a special on New Glarus for only $6.98/sixer, which is as good as anywhere in the state. Regular prices are higher though. If you are looking for more rare stuff, the Village Dell on the north end of town might have it. Assuming those deals are still going, after you hit Rice Lake, the prices are in the $8-9/sixer range. I've heard of visitors to Hayward getting lucky with older, hard to find beers, no longer around in most places so that is an option too. But you are stocking up the NG regulars, don't pass Gordy's in Rice Lake without looking.

Stop at any liquor store along the way and you may find Serendipity, Strawberry Rhubarb, and MAYBE Raspberry Tart (they recently stopped making this). Highly unlikely you will find Belgian Red, unless someone in the North corrects me. Good luck!

I go to Hayward several times every year. I usually frequent The Marketplace grocery store. They have a good selection of Ale Asylum, Central Waters, New Glarus and Tyranena as well as other standard distro like Two Hearted. Also the IGA has a decent selection, a lot more out of date stuff. But if you are looking for 12s they are usually a little cheaper. Also both will have fresh NG at the same price.

This ^. There is a brewery just west of town - don't recall the name - that has so-so beer at best.

Bars in town have mainly BMC and Spotted Cow on tap.

Coffee Grounds has a great selection, but you're going to pay for it. If you're just looking for NG, I would go elsewhere.

You're referring to Angry Minnow. I've heard good things about their Rye IPA. Otherwise, yes, so-so.

The IGA liquor store in Hayward went through the effort to make this video - as well as put in a nice long shot of BCBS for us beer nerds - so will definitely be stopping there to peruse. Not sure if I've ever had anything from Central Waters and definitely have never tasted anything from Tyranena so looking forward to trying new brews. Thanks for all the tips!

I cannot emphasize how important this statement is. This honestly should be read to every person entering WI with the intent of fishing and/or taking part in any lake/river related activity. Now I wouldn't go as far as to say I wouldn't help someone find fish but you should really check Lake Link for that anyways. I'm glad someone said it.

Stopped at market place in Hayward a few times last week when I was fishing the flowage they had a bunch of Berliner and all the regulars except dancing man if I recall correctly. No tart or Belgian red but serendipidy and strawberry where well stocked.

Ive gone threw probably 10 half barrels of the rye in the last four years. Ridiculous price at 100 bucks. They have the double ipa on now to.

Store next door always has some rate gems-check the aisle on far left
