Planning on hitting jester king next Friday. Anyone have any suggestions or best time to go? I'd like to be able to cab it out there but that's not really looking like an option since it's a little ways out. Anything else to be on the look out for while there?

Anytime Friday is good, not too crowded. I recommend catching a sunset out there. It's pretty magical. You can also grab a pizza from Stanley's while out there or go hit up Pieous for the best pastrami sandwhich you will ever have.

I've heard good stuff about the pizza out there. I wish I had a driver, but it looks like the do 4oz pours so that should allow me to taste a good many beers and still be good for the drive back towards downtown

Intrigued about Pieous ... so basically you take the sandwhich to go? Jester King is cool with bringing your own food???

Not when Stanley's is open... Which is most of the time

No he just means JK asks that you do not bring food when Stanley's is open.. and it's almost always open.

That's right Robert. However, now that we've expanded our Saturday hours, 5pm to 10pm Saturday is relatively slow/quiet. Although, yes, 1 pm to 5pm Saturday is very busy. - Jeff

I recommend you don't go unless you want to spend the rest of your days lamenting the fact you can't live there.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.... Looking like we'll be there Friday evening. I think we'll try to get there close to opening time

The wait for a Stanley's pizza I think is 25 min at JK opening time on Fridays, not including waiting to order if there's a line.
So factor that in if you desire. Wait time goes up from there iirc.

Fyi Line waiting time on Saturdays is 20-30 min and pizza wait time is 45+ min.
Not to knock Stanley's but the wait time is a deterrent from patronizing them.
The Chevron on Fitzhugh has pretty good tacos on Saturday mornings, maybe other times too.

Yes! I should give them more credit. The Chevron tacos are great. A little greasy, but great. - Jeff

If I am eating out there, I don't bother with Stanley's and just get pieous. Much faster and just as good (both are great). Stanley's lines have become too long.

Hi, I also would appreciate some recommendations on Jester King. I'll probably make it there in about a month or so. I will be going along with the wife and kids. I would not mind the wait for pizza at all if I were not with my kids, but as it is, I can definitely see them getting bored and pesky.

Someone recommended that I visit the Salt Lick, which appears to be close, and, I have now discovered is BYOB. Plus, I also love BBQ. So would it be a good idea to hit JK on Friday, sample a few things and then get some bottles to go and have dinner at the Salt Lick? I could also try to do this for lunch on Saturday. Thanks in advance.

Salt Lick is a very hit or miss place these days. You go out there for the atmosphere as opposed to the BBQ now. Granted, their BBQ is good, just nothing special anymore.

As far as your kids getting bored, JK seems to have no issue with kids getting bored out there. They have a very large outdoor area where kids can run around free and have fun. I think your kids would get more bored at Salt Lick than JK. Granted, I have no kids and am no expert in this area.

I'd rather hit one of the BBQ places within the east side of Austin (LA BBQ, Kerlin, etc) and you could easily swing by East 1st Grocery to pick up bottles as well before going to Jester King.

To echo @aschwab & @air, Salt Lick wouldn't be a place I'd recommend at all. Kerlin is probably your best bet these days as the meat is simply incredible and the lines are almost non-existent. Since it's almost next door to E1G, you can grab some bottles/cans.

Last time I tried to go to La BBQ the lines were stupid, but it was a Saturday around noon, so ymmv. My Kerlin visit was on Friday though, at 11 am, and there were four people in front of me in line.
