I will be flying into LA in a couple weeks and then going to take a drive down to Alpine Beer Company. Looking to score the following 22 oz beers: Nelson, Duet, EH=PH2 & Pure Hoppiness. Are these beers pretty easy to find at ABC and what is the best time to go to? Any other places that I should check out if they don't have the above beers at ABC?

On the way back to LA I am going to hit The Bruery and hoping to score these beers: Melange No. 3, Bottleworks XII & Oude Tart. Again, what is the best time to go, are they pretty easy to find and other places that I should check out if they don't have them at The Bruery.

    Cheers,

    Todd

    Todd,

Exponential hoppiness is only brewed twice a year, and bottleworks XII is RS/HS exclusive. The rest may be available as alpine often runs out of bottles, and the other Bruery beers are seasonal releases.

Also, swing by Lost Abbey, they have DDG and Izzy for sale. Just ask for it.

If you take the 15 South, Stone Escondido and Ballast Point is on the way to Alpine. Might be able to score some Enjoy By and other stuff. Also Societe is off the 52 and can go there on the way as well.

Check Alpine Beer Co facebook page, they post all their beers as far as bottles, growler fills, and pub selections for the week and weekend. I would imagine it would not be hard to get at least one of those selections, either Duet and Nelson being the easiest to score. Also, if you strike out, check the local liquor stores in Alpine, they there are like three places that carry Alpine beer as well.

Excellent move!! Head to the best in the west first. Check their facebook page the Tue or Weds before you head ut. They always have what to expect for the rest of the week for growler fills and bottles. I don't think they'll have Expo. But the others they may have.

The Bruery is another good move for the OC/LA area. But do yourself a favor and check out Beachwood BBQ & Brewery in Long Beach. A must stop. And very close to the Bruery is Bootleggers and Noble Ale Works. But if you cant make those then Beachwood is a must.

In the past hasn't Exponential Hoppiness been released in February and then again in late July/August? The OP might luck out with that one.

Do they still have a 3 bottle per limit for each beer at ABC?

Since you are hitting the Bruery anyway you could try to do an In Person trade for the Bottleworks XII. Not sure what you have (besides the Huna you listed in Gots) to get this done.

They just started that limit (it was 4 before that), and I don't think it will change any time soon.

When will bottles be ready for pickup? Typically they are not available until the end of the sale which is the 26th. So the earliest I could see bottle being available is the 29th. Just something the OP might need to consider depending on when they plan on going to the Bruery.

Apparently bottles are available now, according to a clarification email I got from the Bruery. I see many bottles up on the Trade Forum.

that was my understanding of the bruery's email as well, that this month's allocations are ready for pick-up right now.

I would hit up Alpine on a Tuesday if at all possible. They often bottle on Sunday & Monday, which gives you the best shot at the most variety. They try to have two of the big three (Duet, Nelson, PH) in bottles all the time. It would also be worth picking up a growler or two to take back to LA with you. Drink those while you're in Cali, and take your bottles home with you.

If you are planning on drinking in SD, Societe is a must-stop brewery. Growlers are a bit pricey, but the Pupil is one of the best new-er IPAs being brewed right now. Toronado and Hamilton's in North Park/South Park are two beer bars that you shouldn't pass up. Bottlecraft nearby has a great selection, and also occasionally has Alpine (usually at a 1 bottle limit).

Food & beer- Tiger!Tiger! & Blind Lady Alehouse are both run by Lee Chase, who brews at Blind Lady under the Automatic Brewing Company name. Small batches (less than 10 barrels for sure) of some really high quality stuff.

For bottles, Krisp Market in downtown SD was my favorite, along with Distiller's Outlet in Poway (a bit out of your way).

I concur about Lost Abbey- don't miss it if you can help it. Near Stone, but their on-site to-go bottle selection is limited at the brewery. Iron Fist is up in that area, along with Ballast Point's main brewery/tasting room.

Pizza Port Carlsbad is right off of I-5, and will have killer beers on tap as well as a solid bottle shop. Not sure on the hours for the bottle shop.

Hope that helps a bit. You can't go wrong choosing 2 or 3 of these places. Personally, I would choose Alpine, Societe (no bottles, though) and Pizza Port Carlsbad.
