My husband and I are heading to the OBX (from Pittsburgh area) in a couple weeks for a week long vacation with the folks. From past experiences, we know that the Outer Banks is not known for its great craft beer scene, so we are debating stopping at a couple places along the way to stock up on some local goodies. We really wanted to take a little detour to visit Lickinghole Creek; however, I see that they are releasing a bottle the day that we would be stopping. While I love bottle releases, this is not exactly what we were looking for knowing that we still have quite a drive ahead of us. Has anyone ever been to a Lickinghole bottle release? Are the releases relatively subdue, or are we looking at a huge crowd and hours of waiting in line? I appreciate any thoughts, or other suggestions for our drive! Thanks!
There will be no crowds or waiting in line on bottle release day at LCCB, it will probably be a great day to go. In the past, there has only been crowds/lines for this year's release of Despot, although I won't be surprised to see something similar for the next release of Supreme Leader. Their other beers are great but don't draw crowds.
@beernuts hit the nail on the head. You will not need to worry about long lines or anything like that for these bottle releases. I have been to several. Their property is large and all outdoors so there will be a lot of room to roam around you you will not be on top of others. They typically have a couple stations for pours setup and the area set aside for purchasing bottles is completely separate from where you get pours.
Stop at the Answer (Richmond VA) and fill some Crowlers.... Best Brewery in VA for Hoppy Brews. Outer Banks Brewery had a fair tap list last weekend Full Moon Brewery was pretty weak last weekend Chips is a must stop in the OBX
Also in OBX: OBX Trio... beer section is on the 1st floor in the back. On the right side of the road as you head south.
This place just opened in Nags Head... More info on their FB page too. http://www.buffalocitybeer.com/
Man...if you're going to specialize in filling growlers, a list of what's on tap would probably do ya well.
If less than 10 miles is "near Duck" then Chip's and Trio are both nearby. (South between Kitty Hawk & Kill Devil Hills)
Haven't been there but have heard people mention Sweet T's in Duck . It's a bar /bottleshop http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26679/?view=ratings
Was just down there last week. Hit all of the above mentioned places and Trio was by far the best in terms of selection.
Agree with above, Trio is the best bottle shop but fyi - just be sure to check bottle dates on beers that are better fresh. Sometimes things can linger in the outer banks more than usual. Also OP, if you don't stop at Lickenhole you can find quite a few of thier beers & others on the shelves in VA.
If you are near Nags Head I highly suggest Waveriders for a good lunch spot. Beer selection is nothing that will blow you out of the water (6 taps and a larger bottle selection), but the beers are good and the food is excellent. It's a deli in the afternoon/coffee shop in the morning. Service is incredibly friendly. It's a good spot.
