Great suggestion. I have a DIPA in secondary, ready for dry hopping this weekend.
Two weeks to see if it compares. after two weeks in primary, it tastes amazing, befor dry hopping no less.

With regard to this threads question, I find Double Jack to be a smoother alternative, but like so many have said NOTHING will be exactly the same as Heady (except maybe my home brew version).

I have had them all (I think) - IPA's of all kinds around the country. I am a HUGE California IPA guy, but I have to give props to Founders Centennial as well as Jai Alai. I live in Florida, and I can assure you, I enjoy Jai Alai NOT because it is the only 'good' IPA Florida offers. It really is an outstanding beer.

Jai Alai has far too much malt backbone IMO. When I'm after an IPA it's because I want some hoppy goodness. A completely balanced beer isn't always a good thing to me. If I'm after a coffee beer I usually want a coffee bomb, not just a beer that has a subtle hint of coffee to add to complexity. I'm the same way with IPAs.

I feel ya on that one. The issue is one of demand, distribution and time. The clock is ticking the moment the beer leaves the fermenter. I think the only way I can really taste what they're experiencing up in the new england states with fresh heady is to just brew it myself.

OTWOA from DC Brau..the brewery always has some on hand but you have to trade someone in DC for it. Well worth the hassle though, its one of my favorites

I know this thread has basically died, and I will admit to not reading through it all so sorry if this has been said already...

I had my first bottle of Lunch today by Maine Brew Co and I have to say it is the closest thing to HT I have ever had (I just had one last week). Incredible brew.

Probably the closest beer I have had to Heady was Jai Alai in concerns to the hop profile. This beer isn't better than Heady by any means, but it is simply the best comparison of taste.

For me the substitute would OTWOA and then Ghandi Bot. Just my opinion.

Closest in Ohio would be Bodhi, or maybe Creeper. Both would be considered HT Lite.

I think Mass Rising is a good comparison, again not nearly as much of a hop explosion, but still a strong hop presence without all of that pesky malt stuff.

I thought Double Sunshine was solid, but not nearly the pop of hops that HT brings to the table.

Then can you explain to me why you have a rating for Heady Topper, Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger?

If you paid attention to the context you would understand that I was simply noticing a difference in palate between me and the person I responded to. WTF does how many beers I've rated have to do with the price of tea in China?

I don't like sculpin, because I think it tastes bad. I think it's overrated because a lot of people think it's the bees knees and I don't like it. Why would it bother you that I think a beer is over rated? It's just an opinion

There is no proxy. These new great ones are regional. I apologize for overtly citing NoDa Hop Drop'n Roll. Find these pleasures and drink them!

For what it's worth. I think sculpin Is overrated too, but I think Nelson is delicious.

And every single rating is a 1.0 or a 5.0. It's a "Who's who" of the top 10, too: PtE, PtY, HT, KBS, everything.

I would think shenanigans on this level would be grounds for a ban, but I'm not a moderator. Sure looks fishy to me, though.
