Heady Topper, no sediment now?

    Before this becomes a national tragedy, let me just say that it tastes as good as ever (the same as always)... The only thing I've noticed is that I've traded for it 3 times over various months and had about a case. Last week I went up to The Alchemist and downed a 4 pack in Waterbury and brought back a bunch and I've had a couple cans. The taste is the same amazingness that I've come to love. The only thing I'm noticing is that none of the cans from the batch I got last week have had any of the sediment that people seem to think makes it look like vomit, not that I am one of those people. I'm just curious if I got a random batch without any/much sediment or what. I've poured them the same, rigorously, leaving no doubt that there is no liquid in the can.

    While I do like both, I think it is better from a glass. Sticking your nose into a freshly poured Heady Topper may be the best thing I've ever had the pleasure of smelling. I'd also put HF Abner somewhere on the short list.

    the last one i opened had some sediment. i usually dont pour out the last bit of most beers though until the very end, for this exact reason.

    I can't say I miss it. If there's no discernible difference in taste, and after 7 cans without sediment there isn't, then I'm all for it. I had a batch that was so filled with sediment that I could feel it as I drank it at the end. That was a little much. Still better than any beer I've ever had. Love the stuff.

    yeah, I'm just odd and have a soft spot for sediment and unfiltered beers... it adds character to me... like a scar or birthmark haha

    Lol, well I can't imagine it's filtered now. It's the haziest beer still. This is a REALLY bright light.

    I don't know how they could change it so dramatically without changing the taste. I also prefer drinking it out of a glass, the aroma comes out better, it breathes better, you get a better feel for how it looks, etc. Just because they know how to brew it doesn't mean they know how to drink it :wink:

    It is a mystery. It still tastes like the best beer I've ever had. I can't get enough of the stuff. The only thing I would think all the yeast would mean is can conditioned, however the mouthfeel and carbonation is still perfect. Very smooth with the right amount of carbonation.

    Hmm... I just analyzed the taste a little further. I'm getting slightly less hop complexity and intensity. Although I can almost guarantee this is a mixture of placebo effect and having the beer enough times that I'm just getting used to it. Nothing is a hop bomb to me anymore. Kinda blows. Maybe I'll take a year off from beer after I'm done with my case and then venture back to Waterbury lol.

    I've had several over the past week or two and most (if not all) have lots of floaties. Still dang good though.

    Interesting. I was at The Alchemist last Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. None of the ones from those days have had any. Strange, but it tastes amazing so screw it.

    There's still some sediment from can to can but certainly not as much as I remember. And yes- the beer is as delicious as ever.

    FYI, that sediment you see floating around in Heady Topper isn't yeast, it is hard hop resin which most scientific research has found to contribute no flavor, aroma, or bitterness.

    This could be evidence of Heady Topper being either dry hopped with whole hop cones or ran through a hop back containing whole hop cones. The recent lack of hard hop resins (the two 4-packs I picked up at the brewery a few weeks ago also did not have the sediment) could be evidence of a switch from whole hop cones to pellets. This is all just speculation though.

    Been enjoying these the past few weeks, mostly from the can, but the one I did pour into a glass had a ton of floaties.

    The sediments varies greatly from one can to the next. I mostly drink out of the can, but I'll test my next couple in the glass...

    Was it still as cloudy as pea soup? Just no floaties? THis has been reported by one of my friends in the past (months ago) too, but I got cans that were made after that which had floaties.

    All I can say is, good thing this beer is full on hoppy - as it helps to overcome it visual difficiencies....

    confirmed that there was no change... just varies from top of the keg to bottom and when it's canned. I picked up more that were canned yesterday morning
