I get heartburn from La fin du monde and a few other Unibroue brews. Very unfortunate because I really enjoy some La Fin. Just curious if this was common with others who have had these and why? Aged on Lees perhaps? Thoughts, comments…..?

That particular beer didn't for me, but it's happened quite a few times with others. Stillwater Cellar Door gave me some of the worst heartburn I've ever had in my life, along with New Glarus Spiced Ale. They were good beers, but I have the Spiced Ale for trade and gave the rest of my Cellar Door away because the heartburn was so terrible.

If it's only Unibroue beers then it's gotta be the yeast strain they use. Or by some huge coincidence you've been eating the same thing whenever you drink their beers.

Happens to me with some of the extremely hoppy beers... hopslam as an example. I make sure to really drag out a bottle at a time, so that helps a bit.

Maybe it's the actual yeast- are you using a decanted pour?

Yeah that's what I was thinking. It's gotta be that particular yeast Unibroue uses because no other beer has given me heartburn.

Probably because of the combo of unfiltered beer that's high in alcohol. I get that sometimes, especially from homebrew.

I've been getting an upset stomach when I drink Westbrook Gose this summer. Brought a case of it back from SC and I can't even finish 2 in a night. Sucks because I really like the beer.

Hi. I'm the unsung king of "Heartburn". I have it 24/7 and have not been able to get rid of it for years (funny thing I even still post on this website, right?). While alcohol in general is a huge agitator of heartburn (or GERD, if it's more than occasional), La Fin du Monde is particularly a strong candidate for causing heartburn. Firstly, La Fin du Monde is high in alcohol, clocking in at 9% abv. When consumed, alcohol relaxes muscles. While it might feel nice when certain muscles relax, when your sphincter opens wide, it allows stomach acid to sneak its way up, causing heartburn. The higher the alcohol, the more this occurs. Secondly, La Fin du Monde is a very highly carbonated beer. The consumption of any carbonated beverage causes something called gastric distention. When this happens, it causes pressure on your esophageal sphincter. Put these two problems together and boom: heartburn.

If you have any other stomach related beer questions (any of you), shoot me a message. Trust me, I've gone through it all (and still am).

the carbonation is what gives me massive reflux. i've had it for 15 years, bad enough to have a hole burnt in my throat :slight_frown:

champagne is instant heartburn for me...as are most Belgian styles like La Fin.

Certain Belgians and almost every Gose/Berliner Weisse makes my acid reflux go insane. It's such a bummer because I love those styles in particular. Hell, if I drink enough of any style I'll get massive reflux. I'm "technically" not supposed to drink much beer....yea right.

Something odd always happens to me when I drink tripels or other very carbonated belgian beers. It's an uncomfortable tight feeling in my throat/ chest. Not to an extreme but not something that's very enjoyable. La Fin was the first beer that did it to me. I tend to stay away from those styles to avoid the foreseeable discomfort now.

Does unibroue use rice in their beer? Rice is extremely bloating and filling and could maybe also cause heartburn.

Heartburn can be caused by any number of things including your diet that day.

And as others have said, alcohol can very easily cause heartburn. Every person on here has experienced heartburn from drinking beer at one time or another. Some sours give me instant heartburn... Cuvee De Jacobins, for example. I love that beer, but can't drink it.
