The same as used in the Pale Ale? Makes me wonder how close this beer is to the pub-only Pale that used to be available in Chico -- loved that when I visited.

My personal rule of thumb for imported hefeweizens based on past experience is if its less than 6 months you are good to go, 6-9 months only if you really want a hefeweizen and there is nothing else within 6 months, and ignore it at 9+ months.

I see that Longstaff already replied to you. He is more generous than I am. IMHO, hefeweizen beers need to be consumed fresh. I personally would not purchase a hefeweizen which is older than 3-4 months.

    Cheers!

I love paulaner so much. It's the beer that opened my mind and the sponsor of the greatest team in the world! Mia San Mia!

My wife also doesn't like hefeweizens, even when we're in Germany and they are fresh. It's my favorite style when we're in Bavaria, but I prefer the clove flavor of the cooler fermented hefe's. An occasional banana milkshake hefe is OK, but I prefer the clove.

The funny thing about world class German beers is that unless you live in Germany, you're limited to buying from the same handful of breweries over and over. It's interesting that more Americans don't try to brew world class German style beers.

You should come visit Southeastern PA. There are a number of craft breweries (Victory, Sly Fox, Troegs, Stoudt’s, etc.) and Brewpubs (Iron Hill, Manayunk. Triumph, Dock Street, etc.) that make high quality German style beers. I should warn you that if you suffer from nostomania this may not ‘scratch your itch’.

    Cheers!

Reading this thread during work inspired me to run and pick up a Weihenstephaner Hefe and an Ayinger Brau-Weisse after work. Enjoying the Weihenstephaner now. Thanks for the inspiration!!

Truly one of my favorite beer styles. I'm always shocked when people refer to them as "boring".

See avatar: I think that the brewers at Rip Current and are doing some nice German beers right now. Last Saturday they had two Hefeweizens, a Roggenbier (awesome) and a nice Weizenbock on tap. I realize that this not the norm in So Cal.

It is good to know that Rip Current is making some tasty German style beers.

A well-made Roggenbier is a beer of beauty. Iron Hill Brewpub has won several GABF medals for their Roggenbier; it is very tasty!! During the summertime they ‘re-name’ the beer as Rye Halladay as a tribute to Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay.

    Cheers!

I had a Kellerweis earlier today. Really, really solid; I'm not sure why I waited so long to try it.

Although I'd like to add that Yazoo's hefeweizen is also quite good, and definitely worth trying if you ever find yourself in Tennessee.

No Love for Hacker Pschorr Weiss? It's my 2nd favorite after weihenstephener, it's got that orange marmalade thing going on.

Also, don't sleep on Julius Echter - a very good weiss!

Weihenstephaner is just amazing. I feel like it's nearly impossible to dislike that beer. I think it's a great transition for people who either don't typically drink beer or drink shitty beer.

For sure, and it was so fresh and tasty last night! Unfortunately the Ayinger Brau-Weisse must have been sitting on the shelf for years. Almost made me throw up when I took a sip. Tasted rancid. Bummer.
